Last week at our AGM we won an award.

The SHARE NZ Excellence in Advice award - Insurance.

I’m not so much flaunted by the award itself. But the words and what that this one means.

It’s one of two presented to SHARE advisers, for SHARE advisers.

It’s not about just me but my team. How we strive to provide good support, be great people and consistently do the right thing.

I am a modest 7 years in this profession and it’s the first award I have received that didn’t have ‘young gun’ or ‘up and coming’ in front of it.

That’s something I’m proud of.

Why do you work hard?

Why do you try and eat healthy?

Why do you pay for your insurance?

Because of them.

Those three things are often time and money spent not just for yourself, but for other people.

The last question…that’s my specialty.

Done right, it’s a pivotal piece in your family’s financial stability.

I’m always thrilled each time a business, couple, family come in who never had cover before or had the bare basics walk away with a solid plan.

Because they have made a decision to support themselves and those around them.

Because it’s not just about you, it’s about them.

Recent KiwiSaver changes - the group left behind

Many sole traders and small business owners don’t contribute to KiwiSaver because they feel they can ‘make the most of the money’ elsewhere.

The hard reality is most actually don’t.

Many small business owners historically contributed $1,042 per year to get the $521 and that’s it.

With the drop to $200 odd they likely won’t bother.

Then when they get to retirement, the business doesn’t sell for that magical figure they had hoped and if they haven’t diversified (many also don’t) it’s a problem.

Because KiwiSaver isn’t as high either.

I understand this is a bit of a case of ‘make your bed and sleep in it’ but policy should consider human nature and reality of what people do.

What it does highlight is my role as a KiwiSaver adviser to this New Zealand cohort is even more important.
