As your Insurance Broker, we want to remind you: Prevention is key. Now is the time to take simple steps to protect your property and loved ones.

✅ Secure outdoor furniture, trampolines, and loose items
✅ Avoid unnecessary travel – stay indoors if possible
✅ Charge devices in case of power cuts
✅ Check on neighbours, especially the elderly or vulnerable

If damage does occur:

Today we pause to remember a defining moment in Dunedin’s history. On 8 August 1979, Abbotsford was shaken by a massive landslip—the largest landslide in a built-up area in New Zealand. The slip destroyed 69 houses and flooded parts of Miller Park and Armstrong Lane below. It involved about 5 million cubic metres (180 million cubic feet) of material, up to 40 metres (130 ft) thick, leaving a 150-metre (490 ft) wide rift at the head of the slip. Hundreds were left homeless, some residents only had seconds to flee, and seventeen people were rescued from a small moving island of solid land. Remarkably and thankfully, there were no fatalities.

What this teaches us is simple: disasters can strike quickly, and protecting what matters most starts with smart insurance. If you live in hills or areas prone to landslips, it’s crucial to check that your home and contents cover includes natural-hazard risk and understand how it all works. A quick policy review can make a big difference when you need to rebuild memories and a life.

We recently attended a really insightful seminar on Home Insurance (yes, we do get excited about these things😆), and we wanted to remind you on the importance of having the right sum Insured on your home!

🟡Confusing Market Value with Rebuild Cost
People often assume the purchase price or estimated market value of their home is enough — but insurance is about what it would cost to rebuild from scratch, not what a buyer would pay.

🔵Forgetting Site-Specific Costs
Rebuilds aren’t just about the house itself — access to the site, retaining walls, driveways, demolition, and council fees all need to be factored in.

🟡Renovations or Additions
If you’ve upgraded the kitchen, added a sleepout, or built a dreamy outdoor space, make sure those are included in your updated cover.

🔵Ignoring Inflation and Construction Trends
