If you’ve been waiting for a sign, the latest Cotality analysis might be it.

Nationally, mortgage repayments now take up around 40% of the gross household income. That’s down from a peak of 54% in late 2021.

House values have also eased to 6.7 times the median household income, compared to 9.8 times at the market’s height (also late 2021).

Still not easy. But a very different picture to a few years ago.

📢 OCR increased to 2.75%

The Monetary Policy Committee has agreed to raise the Official Cash Rate by 25 basis points to 2.75%.

Inflation is currently at 4.1%, driven partly by higher fuel prices, but is expected to return to the 2% target midpoint over the medium term.

New Zealand’s economic recovery appears to be resuming, supported by strong exports and resilient global demand, although household spending, housing and employment remain under pressure.

The Committee expects growth to strengthen and broaden, while remaining alert to global risks and potential inflation pressures.

Future OCR decisions will depend on how the economic outlook and inflation risks evolve.
