What is your Home Sum Insured?
And why is it SO important to get it right?
From earthquakes to flooding or fire, there are many risks to our properties.
If your home was damaged and needed to be rebuilt, would your home insurance be enough?
Building costs have increased substantially in the last 6 months and you might be shortchanged.
HOW can you calculate your sum insured?
You could use:
1. an independent, online calculator provided by your insurer that uses information about your house as a guide to work out how
much it will cost to rebuild your home.
One example is the Cordell Calculator: https://www.vero.co.nz/personal-insurance/house-insurance/cordell-calculator.html

2. professional advice from quantity surveyors who will calculate the full cost of replacing your property
3. a valuation for insurance purposes from a registered valuer
4. an estimate of what it would cost to rebuild your home from a licensed builder or architect

Many factors influence what it will cost to rebuild a house and there is no guarantee that any of these methods on their own will provide a 100% match to the real cost should your house be destroyed. To make sure you have the cover you need, it is
recommended to use more than one of the above methods and reviewing your sum insured each year.
