Canterbury is leading the country right now when it comes to the economy.

In the December quarter, it was one of the strongest regions across most measures, and the outlook looks better than anywhere else. Jobs are growing, up 1.6%, and strong dairy prices, along with Fonterra’s capital return, are putting more money into the region.

People are also spending more. Retail spending has been above the national average since 2023 and grew 6.7% over the past year. The housing market has held up well, and construction is up 8.3%.

All of this points to a region that’s in a strong position, with solid growth and good employment opportunities continuing ahead.

Off the back of unemployment figures suggesting we’re in a crappier place than first thought Westpac has been game enough to drop their 3 year rate to 4.99%. How bloody great is it to see a 4 in front of your interest rate? I imagine other banks will follow suit. Now locking in at this rate might seem worthwhile but I think there is more movement to be had. The economy is in a shocking state and there is great global turmoil on the horizon. I think playing short term is still the way to go. Some thoughts - this is not individual financial advice.
