Is AI going to be there for you when things go wrong? Is it personally liable if it gives poor or misleading advice?

AI can be useful to some extent. It can provide general information and help you understand some of the basics around insurance.

But AI only knows what you ask it and what you tell it, i.e., its prompts. It will keep you happy and generally not disagree with your request.

A good adviser asks the questions you didn’t know needed asking, challenges assumptions and understands the person behind the numbers.

Because when you’re sick, injured, grieving or trying to make a claim, insurance becomes very personal, very quickly.

AI can give you information. A good advisor can give you advice and be there when you actually need it.

A couple of years ago, a business colleague described me as “fastidious.”

At first I laughed, then wondered, "Is this a compliment or criticism?"

So naturally, I looked it up.

Turns out: Very attentive to detail, concerned about accuracy, methodical and meticulous.

Okay. Guilty as charged.

I know I can be a pain about the details. I ask questions. I double-check things. I challenge information when something doesn’t quite add up, and occasionally, I probably spend far too long worrying about something most people wouldn’t even notice.

But when it comes to your insurance and KiwiSaver, I think that’s exactly the person you want in your corner.

Because a small detail today can become a pretty big detail when you’re making a claim, planning your future, or talking about hundreds of thousands of dollars.

So yes… I’m fastidious.

And I’ve decided I’m keeping it.

We share a lot online without thinking about who might be reading it or how that information could be used.

It’s a little different when I’m helping clients with KiwiSaver and insurance. I need to understand your finances, family and goals to give you appropriate advice, and that information is shared for a reason.

So, my highly technical cybersecurity advice:

* Dog photos? Absolutely.
* What you had for dinner? Sure.
* Why you do what you do and how you help people? Of course.
* Personal information that helps strangers join the dots? Maybe not.

Share wisely online. Share intentionally with people you trust.

I've developed a highly sophisticated system for dealing with jobs I don't really want to do.

I leave them for "Future Kyle".

"Future Kyle" is apparently more organised, has more spare time and, judging by the number of jobs I've given him. He's an incredibly capable bloke!

Unfortunately, people do the same thing with their financial planning.

'I really should review my insurance.'
'I should probably check my KiwiSaver.'
'I'll get around to it one day.'

The problem is, life doesn't always wait for future you.

Health changes. Families change. Financial goals change.

My job is to make those conversations simple and make sure your insurance and KiwiSaver still fit where you're heading.

Last week, I posted what I thought was a great piece of content on social media. It had a clear message, a professional image, and I was expecting it to generate some good conversations.

The response wasn't what I expected.

It was a timely reminder that assumptions don't always match reality.

I see the same thing when talking with clients about their financial wellbeing.

Many assume their personal risk insurance still suits their needs, or that their KiwiSaver is on the right track, simply because they haven't had a reason to question it.

The truth is, life changes. Your family, career, income and goals evolve over time, so it's worth making sure your financial plans evolve with them.

A simple review can replace assumptions with confidence and help ensure you're protecting what matters most while staying on track for the future.

Two insurance policies can look almost identical.

But when you look at the details, the differences can be significant.

One policy may include benefits that help you get back on your feet after illness or injury. Another may have exclusions or limitations that only become obvious when it's time to make a claim.

That's why I don't just compare premiums. I compare what really matters.

The cheapest option isn't always the best value, especially when your family's financial future is on the line.

If it's been a few years since you reviewed your personal risk insurance or you arranged it online because it seemed easy, it might be worth asking one simple question:

"Does my cover still do what I think it does?"

Sometimes a review confirms you've got great cover. Sometimes it uncovers opportunities to better protect what matters most.

Let's be honest.

Most of us are terrible at life admin.

We can spend three hours researching the best barbecue or next holiday destination, but ask us to find an insurance policy document from five years ago, and suddenly it's "somewhere in my emails" or "I think it's in that drawer".

That's where a financial adviser like me really earns their keep.

When you need to make a claim, my job isn't to wish you good luck and hand you an 0800 number. I help guide you through the process, explain what's needed, liaise with the insurer, chase up information, and keep things moving.

At a time when you're often dealing with illness, injury, or the loss of a loved one, the last thing they need is paperwork and phone queues.

Insurance isn't just about having a policy. It's about having someone in your corner when life doesn't go to plan.

At the same time, Southern Cross paid $21.3 million for 7,524 colonoscopies in just three months (April–June 2026), making it their second most claimed procedure (Southern Cross claims data)

This matters because New Zealand has one of the highest rates of bowel cancer in the world. More than 3,000 Kiwis are diagnosed every year, over 1,200 lose their lives, and 1 in 18 New Zealanders will develop bowel cancer during their lifetime (https://bowelcancernz.org.nz/).

While no one plans on needing a colonoscopy, having the right private health cover can mean faster access when time matters most.

I have what is probably the world’s strangest job.

I spend my days creating solutions that I sincerely hope my clients never have to use.

Imagine buying something and your advisor says, "I hope you never get your money’s worth!". Yet that’s exactly what personal risk insurance is.

The value isn’t in making a claim. It’s knowing the solution is already there if life throws you an unexpected curveball because once that moment arrives, you can’t rewind the clock and decide to put cover in place.

So, while I hope every one of my clients pays their premiums for years and never needs to call me about a claim, I sleep well knowing that if life has other plans, they’ve already got a solution waiting for them.

One of the things I enjoy most about my role is that sometimes the biggest wins come from simply asking the right questions.

Recently, I was reviewing a client's insurance programme when I spotted that something wasn't quite right with their employer-provided insurance scheme.

On the surface, everything appeared to be in order, but after digging a little deeper, it became clear there was an issue that needed to be addressed.

The client raised it with their employer, who acknowledged the oversight and escalated it to their head office to have it resolved. The outcome? It wasn't just a win for my client; it has the potential to improve the insurance arrangements for their entire team.

This is exactly why independent advice matters.

It's easy to assume that employer-provided insurance has everything covered, but that's not always the case. Having someone who can independently review your cover, ask the right questions, and identify issues before they become problems can make a significant difference.

For me, it's not just about recommending insurance policies. It's about advocating for my clients, helping them understand what they have, identifying where things don't quite add up, and ensuring they're in the best possible position.

Sometimes, one conversation can make a difference far beyond the person sitting across the table.
