I keep getting asked, when is the best time to get personal insurance?

The answer is simple - before it’s too late!!

No one is invincible and yes, it could happen to you, why do you think give a little is a thing? But no one can really rely on give a little.

Once you have debt or children, get Life Insurance.

As soon as you start working, get income protection.

The amount of people that get turned away or getting exclusions applied due to pre existing conditions is increasing. It’s much easier when you are young and healthy, before things start happening to you….. and before it’s too late.

No one knows what the future holds.

I'm sure you have all seen those ads where they tell you that they know a secret that insurance companies don't want you to know about.

you know the ones..

A teaser that grabs your attention by the promise of saving you money, with no real context.

Well stop before you make any rash decisions and I'll tell you why.

1. No two insurers are the same, cheaper price may come with hidden clauses...are you prepared to take the risk?

2. Insurers are changing their prices all the time, what may be cheaper this year could end up being more expensive the next. What are you going to do, change insurers every year? really, you can be bothered with that?

3. Changing insurers could result in exclusions due to a change in health circumstances. Do you really want to change from being fully insured with one company to having conditions applied to a new policy with another company?

Currently, insurers in New Zealand are revamping their policy wordings in order to try and keep the costs down, in order to do this they are weakening the product for new clients. This is fine if you don't currently have insurance, but if you already have cover in place with guaranteed policy wordings, you will be going from strong cover, to a cover that may not pay out under certain circumstances.

Meeting with a Registered Financial Adviser is the only way to ensure you are making an informed decision on any changes that you want to make, rather than listening to a vague video about secrets insurers don't want you to know.

If you want to know a secret that's not really a secret to save money on your premiums, THEN LEVEL YOUR PREMIUMS!!!

If your kiwi saver provider does not offer protection against major world events that jeopardise your savings, PM me and let me put you in touch with someone who does.

Are you against life insurance (or health, trauma, income protection) ?

What is your reason for not thinking it’s a worthwhile investment?

Insurance is never set and forget. Circumstances change and what was fit for purpose 2 years ago may not be applicable now.

Having yearly reviews with your adviser is the best way to ensure the cover is right for you, there is nothing worse than being over insured (and paying too much) or being under insured and having a shortfall when the sh*t hits the fan.

Don’t ignore the call or email from your adviser, and if it’s been a while, then call them.

Insurance companies that deal with life and health cover pay out over 96% of claims.

It’s often a myth that insurance companies will try anything to not have to pay out a claim, but based on this fact it’s the opposite.

The other 4% is due to non disclosures by the client or being misleading on the application and being found out.

What has been your experience when making a claim?
