A couple of months ago, I had the honour of being asked to MC the wedding of some great friends.
To be honest... my first reaction was, "Are you sure you've got the right guy?" 😅
I didn't know many of their friends, there was a bit of an age gap, and public speaking has never been something that comes naturally to me. Did I try to get out of it? Yep. Did self-doubt creep in? Absolutely.
But I said yes.
Then came the preparation. Sleepless nights. Random ideas popping into my head at all hours. Notes on my phone. Rewriting the running sheet. Thinking of stories, jokes, and those little moments that would make the day personal. And yes... I even used AI to help tidy up my speech (it's an amazing tool when you use it the right way!).
When the day arrived, I was 100% nervous. But once I got started, I realised something.
Preparation beats panic.
It actually reminded me a lot of what I do every day as an insurance adviser.
No two people or families are the same. Every meeting takes preparation. Every recommendation should be personalised. I use the tools available to me, simplify the complicated, and try to make what can be a serious conversation relaxed, engaging, and easy to understand.
The wedding taught me that saying "yes" to something outside your comfort zone can be incredibly rewarding. Growth doesn't happen when everything feels easy. It happens when you challenge yourself.
A huge thank you to the happy couple for trusting me with such an important role. It was a privilege to be part of your special day🥂.
And to everyone else... if you've been putting something off because you're worried you're not good enough, maybe this is your sign to back yourself. You might surprise yourself.
Here's a couple of pics from the day with my beautiful better half ❤️ and some of the old work crew... a bunch of absolute legends! We might be getting older, but judging by these photos, we definitely haven't grown up! 😂🍻
And yes... I'm still happier talking insurance than standing in front of 100 wedding guests! 😅
