We asked our team: what’s the highest car payment you’ve ever seen?

The answer? $12,000 a month. For a Ferrari.

Now, most of us aren’t financing Ferraris and that’s fine. The point is, payments come in all shapes and sizes, and what matters is finding one that actually works for you.

Whether you’re looking at something practical or something a little more exciting, we’ll work with your budget and find a structure that makes sense.

If you want the best chance of getting approved, there are five things worth doing before you apply.

1. Check your credit report

Know what lenders will see before they do. You can check it for free, and if anything’s wrong, you can get it corrected first.

2. Pay down existing debts where you can

The less you owe elsewhere, the better your position looks to a lender.

3. Save a deposit

Even a small deposit reduces the amount you need to borrow and shows you can manage your money. Both help.

4. Be realistic about the vehicle

The purchase price drives the loan size. Keep it within what your income can comfortably support.

5. Get pre-approval before you go shopping

It tells you your likely budget upfront, so you’re not falling in love with something that won’t stack up.

Fill out our online form and we’ll be in touch to talk through your options.

General Information Only. Approval is subject to lender criteria, terms and conditions.

Declined for car finance? Here's what the lender actually saw.

Lenders don't reject people. They reject applications that look too risky on paper. The difference matters, because it means the problem is usually fixable.

Here are the four most common reasons it happens:

1. Your income doesn't cover the repayments. If your outgoings are already tight, lenders can't see how the repayments fit. No clear affordability, no approval.

2. Your credit history has some marks on it. Arrears, defaults, missed payments. They show up. It doesn't automatically rule you out, but it does affect how lenders see you.

3. Too many recent credit applications. Every application leaves a footprint on your credit file. A run of them in a short window raises flags.

4. The loan amount is too high for your income. Lenders have a legal obligation not to approve more than you can realistically repay. If the number doesn't stack up against your income, it won't get through.

The good news? All four are things you can work on before you apply.

Post 2 next week covers exactly how.

Your car loan rate isn't random. Three things drive it.

💳 Credit history
How you've managed money over time. A strong record can help strengthen your application, even if your file isn't perfect.

📅 Loan term
Longer terms mean lower payments but more interest overall. Worth knowing the trade-off before you sign.

🚘 Vehicle value
Lenders verify it automatically against live market data. Where it gets more interesting is deposit. Putting money down reduces lender risk at exit, and some lenders score that in your favour. The same deposit can get different results with different lenders.

No savings? No problem.

$0 deposit car finance means you could get on the road without waiting months to save. Borrow the full purchase price, keep your cash intact, and choose repayments that suit your budget.

Here's what people usually ask us:
1️⃣ Can I actually get approved with no deposit?
Yes. Some lenders offer 100% finance. Approval depends on your circumstances, but it's worth finding out.

2️⃣Will my interest rate be higher?
It can be. That's why we compare multiple lenders so you can see your options and choose what fits.

3️⃣What vehicles are eligible?
Most passenger vehicles, from small cars to larger SUVs, subject to lender criteria.

4️⃣ Any upfront costs at all?
No deposit required, but there may be registration or on-road charges depending on the vehicle.

5️⃣ How fast can I get approved?
Usually within a business day once we have everything we need.

If a lump sum deposit is the thing standing between you and your next car, this could be worth exploring.

These are the SUVs our clients choose the most.

From the Mazda CX-5 to the RAV4 Hybrid, these are the vehicles our clients are actually driving away in. The Outlander fits the whole crew with seven seats. The Corolla Cross ticks every practical box. And the RAV4 Hybrid sits at the top for a reason - best-seller in NZ, top safety ratings, top fuel economy, and a hybrid that saves you money every single week at the pump.

White. Manual. $1,500. She was 17.

It was an absolute lemon. Cost a fortune to repair. She cranked her beats and cruised everywhere in it anyway.

That's Alicia from our team. Her first car was a 1987 Toyota Celica, and when we asked her about it last week, she said: "The freedom of having your first car is an incredible feeling. I just used to drive everywhere because I loved it so much."

She'd have another one in a heartbeat.

We're in the business of getting people behind the wheel. But today we just want to know one thing.
What was YOUR first car? Make, model, colour. Drop it in the comments.

Walking into a dealership without knowing your finance options is like going to the supermarket hungry with no budget. You'll say yes to things you didn't plan for.

Smart buyers do one thing first: they sort their finances before they shop.

That means knowing what you could borrow, what repayments might look like, and who you're actually borrowing from. Vega Auto works directly with lenders on your behalf. Not the dealership's lenders. Yours.

Save this for when you’re ready to start looking. Or send it to someone who is.
