Immediate action – Security
Please do what is required to make sure your home or building is secure over this time of uncertainty or unoccupancy however, it is important to remember that your safety is the main priority. If you are unable to safely enter your property, refrain from doing so, and instead, reach out to your local security provider or emergency services to provide further assistance.

Immediate action - Drying
The next step will be to reach out to Chem-dry , specialist cleaning and drying service providers who are aligned to most insurance companies. Whilst Chem-dry may not be able to immediately visit your property without further instruction from your insurer, or emergency services, contacting them will mean you are added to their service pipeline, and at the very least, will be able to speak to an expert who can advise on best method for drying out until they can visit the property in the meantime.

Claim Lodgement
Insurers will be pushed to their limits, and at this stage, we are unsure how they will instruct assessors to visit properties. Whether they will allocate assessor by area, severity of damage, or, in order of claim lodgement.

Remember to take photos and make notes of items which have been destroyed by the water.

Alternative Accommodation (if relevant)
Alternative accommodation benefits are available under house and contents policies if your home is unsafe and uninhabitable. Please your broker or insurer immediately if this is the case for your home, as these claims instantly become the highest priority with insurers, and may be able to escalate your claim.

Mitigate Loss
Finally, given the Auckland wide effects of the rain, Insurers will be aware that insured’s need to take prudent steps to mitigate any further loss from occurring. This means you can take comfort knowing that you can do what you need to, by stopping any further damage from happening. Chem-dry may be able to assist further with advice on reducing water damage.
