Our Annual Meeting is this Friday

Just finishing off the final touches on our Annual Meeting Presentation. We look forward to hosting our Shareholders this Friday at the iconic Bethells Beach Cottages on Auckland's Wild West Coast.

All of our Shareholders are either Staff or Clients of Bonded NZ. It will be great to have a chat about how the business is going and perhaps other important things like the AB's chances of victory on Sunday!!

Glad to have established this JV with Bonded NZ to service their client’s finance needs

One major change for us this year was the establishment of our own Finance Company to service our clients - NZ Allied Funding Ltd (NZAF).

The finance for our clients that wanted to pay monthly was previously farmed out to other providers in the past. These suppliers were great to deal with and done a great job for our clients. However with our own company we have more control over the terms, rates & loan periods available to our clients.

NZAF is owned by an investment company that has a common shareholding with Bonded NZ Ltd - NZ Asset Invest. Other shareholders include clients and employees of Bonded NZ.

Good news from our friends @ Infratil who had their Commerce Commission application to buy half of Vodafone New Zealand approved. The purchase is a JV with Brookefield Asset Mgmt and will be the largest asset on the Infratil books @ $1.7B.

I have read a fair bit about the dramas @ Theranos since their collapse in 2018. The facts behind the story are truly amazing - if they made a Hollywood movie with the same plot you would dismiss it as fanciful:

- Theranos was started in 2003 by a 19 year old college dropout with an idea to revolutionise the blood screening and diagnostics market. she had many personal "quirks" that are detailed in the documentary
- This so called "revolutionary" or "disrupter" was Elizabeth Holmes. She was by all accounts a very skilled communicator and motivator but had limited skills in engineering and science. She did not understand what could or could not be done within the limitations of technology.
- Holmes assembled an all star board of former politicians and business people. Very skilled people who all believed the hype blindly.
- Theranos also attracted investment of around USD$900m from some of the most astute investors around including Rupert Murdoch and the family that owns Walmart.

As you can probably imagine - this combined to create one massive mess once they finally collapsed after 15 years of operation - never managing to achieve their product goals.

This just reinforces my beliefs about conservative investing. We only invest in profitable and stable companies with a track history and we prefer companies with dividends. The potential to "knock it out of the park" with a 10x or 20x payoff is less but so are the risks
