πŸ’° What is the Official Cash Rate (OCR)? πŸ’°

The Official Cash Rate (OCR) is an interest rate set by the Reserve Bank of New Zealand (RBNZ), which is the banker for our commercial banks. It is the wholesale rate at which banks can borrow money and it influences all the other interest rates you see out there, like those for mortgages and savings accounts.

When the RBNZ changes the OCR, it can have a pretty big ripple effect on your wallet.

Currently the OCR is sitting at 2.25%.

πŸ”‰ Why are OCR Announcements important? πŸ”‰

The RBNZ uses these announcements to signal its thinking about the economy. If activity is high and prices are increasing, they might increase the OCR to cool things down. Or, if the economy is sluggish and people aren’t spending, they might lower it to encourage borrowing and spending.

πŸ”‰ Key Official Cash Rate (OCR) Announcement Dates for 2026 πŸ”‰

The Reserve Bank has a pretty regular schedule for their OCR announcements. They tend to happen every couple of months, with some being more in-depth than others. The big ones, called Monetary Policy Statements, usually come with a more detailed look at the economy and the RBNZ’s thinking. The other announcements are Monetary Policy Reviews, which are more like check-ins.

Here’s the full list of key OCR announcement dates for 2026 -

⏺️ 27th May 2026 - Monetary Policy Statement & OCR announcement
⏺️ 8th July 2026 - Monetary Policy Review & OCR announcement
⏺️ 2nd September 2026 - Monetary Policy Statement & OCR announcement
⏺️ 28th October 2026 - Monetary Policy Review & OCR announcement
⏺️ 9th December 2026 - Monetary Policy Statement & OCR announcement

πŸ’₯ OCR UNCHANGED AT 2.25% πŸ’₯

As expected, the Reserve Bank of New Zealand (RBNZ) has kept the Official Cash Rate (OCR) unchanged at 2.25% βš–.

The overriding factor in today’s decision is the fallout from US and Israeli strikes on Iran, which has seen oil prices increase sharply. New Zealand, which imports all of its refined fuel, is acutely exposed to the disruption.

The RBNZ now faces a tough balancing act in supporting activity while containing inflation (target is 1 - 3%). So it is very much a "watch this space".

✨ Waitangi Day ✨

Today marks the anniversary of the initial signing of the Treaty of Waitangi on 6 February 1840.

The Waitangi Treaty was signed by Māori chiefs and representatives of the British Crown and is often considered to be New Zealand’s founding document. The day was first officially commemorated in 1934, and it has been a public holiday since 1974.

For some people, Waitangi Day is a holiday; for many, and especially for Māori, it is the occasion for reflecting on the Treaty.

However you choose to celebrate and acknowledge Waitangi Day, we hope that it is a great day for all!

πŸ’š Mental Health Awareness Week πŸ’š

This week is Mental Health Awareness week (MHAW) which is an annual campaign that works to help Kiwis understand what boosts their wellbeing and improves mental health.

This year’s theme is Top Up Together which serves as a reminder of the benefits of making social connections.

Social connection is crucial for our wellbeing. It brings purpose and a sense of belonging to our lives, helps us feel valued, and makes us happier and more secure. Evidence shows that activities involving social interaction matter β€” actions like volunteering, shared learning, physical activity, cultural practices, and community events consistently have a positive impact on mental health and wellbeing.

Here are some ways you can connect with others today

βœ… Is there someone that you haven’t spoken to in a while? Why not send a message or arrange a catch up in person.

βœ… At the end of the day, ask a friend, your family or work colleague what the best thing about their day was and listen with interest when they tell you

πŸ’₯ GREAT NEWS πŸ’₯

The Reserve Bank has announced today they're cutting the Official Cash Rate (OCR) by 50 basis points to 2.50% β¬‡πŸ“‰

This cut is more than what some had been forecasting, and it's likely we should see further cuts in the future.

In its statement accompanying its decision, the Reserve Bank wrote that the committee "remains open to further reductions in the OCR as required for inflation to settle sustainably near the 2% target midpoint in the medium term".

Finance Minister Nicola Willis has welcomed the news.

"Today’s decision means the OCR has now dropped from 5.5% to 2.5% in just over a year - a significant shift that is taking some of the edge off a very challenging economic recovery."

Several main banks have already reduced their mortgage interest rates in the past week in anticipation of today’s OCR cut. This is great news for borrowers who are due to refix their mortgages over the next couple of months.

If you're thinking about buying a new home, refinancing your existing mortgage or you have a fixed rate expiring shortly, now is a great time to speak with the team at Wayne Henry Mortgages to see how you can take advantage of these lower interest rates.

✨ Risky Biz with Rosy ✨

In just 8 weeks, my family saved over $110,000 thanks to health insurance.

The last 8 weeks have been a whirlwind for my family. Myself and two of my family members have all needed surgery – 3 operations in total.

We spent 14 nights in hospital between us, each time in a private room with our own bathroom and meals on call. From the moment of GP referral to being on the operating table was less than 14 days – every single time.

βœ… The total cost of our treatment was over $110,000
πŸ€” What we actually paid? Just $1,050 in excesses

It’s hard to explain the relief that came with knowing we didn’t have to worry about waiting months for surgery, or figuring out how to cover the bills. We could just focus on supporting each other and recovering.

As an insurance adviser, I’ve always believed in the importance of private health insurance – but living through this experience has taken that belief to another level. It’s not just about money. It’s about peace of mind, speed of treatment, and being able to take care of your family when life throws you something unexpected.

I’m so grateful we had the right cover in place. πŸ™

πŸ’₯ GREAT NEWS πŸ’₯

The Reserve Bank has announced today that it was reducing the Official Cash Rate (OCR) by another 25 basis points to 3.00% β¬‡πŸ“‰ with potential for further reductions in the OCR before the end of the year to 2.5%.

In just over a year, the OCR has fallen from 5.5% to 3%. This is good news for borrowers who are due to refix their mortgages before the end of 2025 as potentially they'll be coming off a mortgage rate in the 6s or 7s and refixing in the 4s πŸ’°πŸ’΅

If you're thinking about buying a new home, refinancing your existing mortgage or you have a fixed rate expiring shortly, now is a great time to speak with the team at Wayne Henry Mortgages to see how you can take advantage of these lower interest rates.
