Home Ownership Pathway director was honoured to attend the 8-year celebration of the Mo‘ui Lelei Tou leleleka Group yesterday, an Auckland-based Tongan elderly wellbeing group.

The event was a reminder that strong communities are built through family, culture, sacrifice, and consistently showing up for people face-to-face. The group was originally established by the late father of HOP Founder, Andrew Lavulavu.

What stood out most was the importance of connection:

Family.
Belonging.
Ageing with dignity.
And ensuring that elders remain connected to the community rather than isolated from it.

At Home Ownership Pathway, we’ve always believed housing is bigger than just a transaction.

A stable home creates:
🏡 security for families
🏡 stability for children
🏡 stronger future generations

Mālō ‘aupito to everyone serving elders and communities quietly behind the scenes every week ❤️

*The group is currently seeking support toward transport and van resourcing to help elderly members continue attending and staying connected with the community. If you can donate, contribute, or support in any way, please consider supporting here:*

🛑 OPINION 🛑
KiwiSaver is the best thing since sliced bread, milk, honey… and butter for New Zealand 🇳🇿🏡

𝘖𝘱𝘪𝘯𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘱𝘪𝘦𝘤𝘦 𝘸𝘳𝘪𝘵𝘵𝘦𝘯 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘏𝘰𝘮𝘦 𝘖𝘸𝘯𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘩𝘪𝘱 𝘗𝘢𝘵𝘩𝘸𝘢𝘺 𝘣𝘺 𝘈𝘯𝘥𝘳𝘦𝘸 𝘓𝘢𝘷𝘶𝘭𝘢𝘷𝘶 (𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘱𝘳𝘦𝘫𝘶𝘥𝘪𝘤𝘦).

KiwiSaver may be one of the best policy decisions introduced in modern New Zealand history.

For many Kiwi families, it has become the difference between:
👉 renting long term
OR
👉 building a genuine pathway toward home ownership 🏡✅

But here’s the bigger conversation we should now be having as a country:

What if we evolved KiwiSaver even further?

Imagine:
✅ Compulsory KiwiSaver participation with structured “head-start” support
✅ Ongoing milestone-based top-up contributions throughout life stages
✅ Government support layered strategically over time
✅ Employers incentivised to help build long-term staff stability and participation
✅ Councils and developers working together to support first-home outcomes
✅ Banks contributing more strategically toward KiwiSaver-linked lending pathways

Not as a handout system.

As a nation-building system.

Because when more families own homes:
✔️ Communities stabilise
✔️ Financial capability improves
✔️ Long-term dependence reduces
✔️ Health and education outcomes improve
✔️ Intergenerational wealth begins forming
✔️ Aotearoa becomes stronger economically and socially

Right now, too many hardworking families are still stuck in survival mode despite doing everything right.

The future model should reward:
➡️ consistency
➡️ contribution
➡️ financial discipline
➡️ long-term commitment

KiwiSaver proved structured systems work.

Now it’s time to think bigger.

At Home Ownership Pathway, we see every week how close many families actually are once the right structure, education, and pathway are put around them.

Housing is no longer just a property conversation.

It is an economic infrastructure conversation. 🏗️🏠

📸 In 2021, Home Ownership Pathway hosted senior Kāinga Ora leaders in Auckland to share our programme insights, operational experience, and scalable first-home buyer pathway model focused on better outcomes for Kiwi families, particularly Māori and Pasifika communities.

The conversation has never been just about a home loan.

It has always been about:
🏡 stronger families
🏡 stronger communities
🏡 long-term financial stability
🏡 intergenerational outcomes

Home ownership is bigger than property.

It creates stronger families, stronger communities, and sets people up for long-term success. 🏡✅

🏡 27 years with the same company.
Loyalty. Discipline. Patience.

For Sid & Chan, that commitment and consistently contributing to KiwiSaver built something powerful over time, a significant deposit of $240k. 💥

When the market slowed recently, the timing finally lined up.✨

After years of saving and hoping, they’ve now stepped into home ownership as first home buyers. 🏡✅

They first reached out to Home Ownership Pathway a couple of years ago. From there we built the plan together, understanding their position, mapping the pathway, and working through the steps.

Like most families on the journey, there were ups and downs, challenges and setbacks.
But with the right guidance and persistence, we got there.

Some might say it’s the “team colours” they support that brought the luck 😉😅🙏🏽

But the truth is simpler:

Discipline and a Plan.

A huge congratulations to Sid & Chan 🏡
They’re now homeowners and role models for their children and wider whānau. ✅

🌿 Key message for anyone thinking about buying:

🏠 Get experienced advice
🏠 Start the process early

If you’ve been contributing to KiwiSaver for several years and wondering whether you might already be closer than you think to buying your first home, it might be worth having that conversation.

Are these policy tweaks actually helping real whanau or will nothing change at the checkout?

Recent data shows living costs up 2.4%, rents up 2.6%, and house prices flat or slightly down even with today’s rate easing.

Yet for most families, the pressure won’t shift much at all.

With Christmas coming, a lot of people are asking:
How much will these changes like rate drops, KiwiSaver tweaks, “lower inflation” claims actually show up in our wallets as real dollars?

Will it even cover the Christmas ham… let alone a scoop of ice cream on the pavlova?

At the end of the day, NZ is dealing with two core issues:
➡️ Rising cost of living
➡️ Affordable housing

Both are fundamental to how everyday families survive, budget, and plan ahead 🏠

We’re all making sacrifices somewhere.

Check out some simple tips below 👇🏽 for small, practical moves that actually help:

💡 Tip 1: Set a Christmas budget now, your January self will thank you later. Start your weekly budget before Dec 1st.

💡 2. Swap ONE takeaway a week

Cutting everything isn’t realistic so swapping just one takeaway saves $20–$40 instantly.

💡 3. Do a 10-minute weekly money reset

Most families don’t track the small leaks like iPhone app subscriptions, impulse buys, after pay, random spends.
A quick Sunday check-in helps spot waste and stretch the weekly budget further.

Are we cutting back on the coffee as well?
☕️😉

Are We Building More Houses Real Quick… or Building a Future Crisis?
Opinion piece by Andrew Lavulavu for Home Ownership Pathway
Another developer was fined, this one $48,000 for illegal earthworks on the North Shore.
Most people will scroll past this and think, “That’s the council’s problem.”
But it’s not.
It’s a people problem.
A community problem.
A future generation's problem.
Because every time oversight is weak…
every time planning gets rushed…
every time a development cuts corners…
Families pay the real price.

In the 50s–70s, New Zealand built homes that lasted.
Solid foundations. Real sections. Space. Sunlight. Stability.
A fair pathway into ownership.
Today, we’re building $700k townhouses stacked on tiny strips of land… and asking families to take on 25–30-year repayments.
And families are telling us the same thing:
“We want more value for our money.”

Some of these rushed consents and planning decisions don’t always protect buyers, neighbourhoods, or the long-term well-being of communities.
And risk sits quietly beneath the surface… until something goes wrong.
This is no longer just a construction issue.
Yes, we can build 100,000 new houses real quick.

But maybe it’s time to pause, look around our cities and streets, and ask:
Are we fixing the housing crisis… or designing the next one?
Because this might be a policy-and-systems issue, not just a supply issue.
Aotearoa doesn’t just need “more houses.”
(Technically, we could drop a street full of container homes and tick that box, but that’s not who we are.)
We need to build better homes!?
Designed for families, for communities, with integrity, accountability, and long-term thinking.
🏡 Smarter town planning
📜 Stronger development oversight
💰 Affordability pathways that genuinely set families up to succeed
🤝 Housing systems that protect communities and not exploit them
✔ Supply + ✔ Regulation + ✔ Price Points = Real solutions

We won’t solve the crisis by repeating the same mistakes.
If we’re not careful, we’re just building the next one.

📸 2nd image: HOP presenting in 2017 on sustainable housing outcomes and culturally intelligent pathways... because this work didn’t start today, and it won’t end here.

💬 What do you think?
Is it time to pause and reflect?

Do we need better planning, better policy, or real accountability?

🌏 A Journey of Unity, Blended Family, and Firsts at Midlife 🏡

Rob & Natia | Māori & Samoan | Mt Eden 🏠, Auckland

When Rob and Natia came to us, they were navigating one of the most important decisions in a complex situation.
A newly blended family, both with existing commitments, now stepping into a new chapter in life together, purchasing a first home together in Auckland.

They wanted more than just a house.
They wanted a home base, a foundation that symbolised their unity, commitment, and the new journey ahead.

An offer on a suitable location, a place in Mt Eden had now been accepted, but as multiple agents, lawyers, and decisions came at them fast, the stress began to build…🤯

💭 “Do we have enough finance”?
💭 “We both have existing loans”? But how do we make this work together”?
💭 “Should we set up a trust”?
💭 “Do we need a toxicology report”?
💭 “Is this even the right property”?

Questions turned into sleepless nights.
Uncertainty turned into hesitation😳

That’s when they reached out to Home Ownership Pathway.
Through independent advice, clear structure, and expert navigation, every challenge found a solution. Within days, their finance options were mapped, their pathway secured, and the property went unconditional. ✅

Today, Rob and Natia stand proud as new Auckland homeowners, a testament to what’s possible when you have the right guidance through life’s complex chapters.

At HOP, we believe home ownership is more than numbers and paperwork, it’s about people, trust, and the stories that shape our journeys.

Congratulations, Rob & Natia. Welcome home. 🏠

🏡Redefining Financial Advice for a New Generation in Aotearoa ✨🏡

We’re proud to celebrate our founder, Andrew Lavulavu, recognised in Mortgage Professional Australia (MPA) for his leadership in reshaping mortgage advice across New Zealand.

🔑 What sets Andrew apart?
In an industry often driven by high churn and commission-first thinking, Andrew chose a different path. He built Home Ownership Pathway, a trusted brand that places the first-home buyer journey at the centre. His focus is on financial confidence, cultural understanding, and long-term capability for families and communities too often overlooked by “advice as usual.”

Traditionally, if people didn’t tick the right boxes or couldn’t transact immediately, they were often left behind.

Andrew turned that on its head. For him, the journey matters just as much as the outcome.

That conviction comes from his early work in creating a social enterprise, where he saw firsthand that sustainable change is built not on transactions, but on education, empowerment, and trust over time.

Andrew’s vision for financial services is clear:
➡️ Put people before profit
➡️ Equip families with knowledge to make confident decisions at every stage
➡️ Create pathways where the journey itself is part of the success and first homes become lasting legacies

👉🏽 Read the full feature here:

This philosophy has already reshaped the first-home buyer journey for many Kiwis especially Pasifika and Māori families and providers across Aotearoa. More than that, it is redefining what best practice in New Zealand financial services should look like for the future.
