In a coaching session with a client recently my client gave me a perfect example of how coaching can positively affect not only the individual but those around them too.

After only 3 weeks:

His relationship has improved as he shares what he's learning with his partner. She's also taking on some of the concepts herself. He said he joked with her that she should be paying half his coaching fees!

He's started to apply more constructive thinking habits in his workplace, and has passed this on to his team, with concrete results for the business.

After only 3 weeks!

Controversial? 😲

I've heard some coaches say things like:

"Let the client guide the session"
"The client is in charge"
"A coach's role is to ask questions and let the client find the answers"

I disagree. 🤔

Yes, it's important to listen to your client and to understand where they're coming from.

It's also important to talk about and deal with the issues most important to them, and to find the answers together.

But your client came to you in the first place because they're struggling to figure things out by themselves.

They're not just looking for a sounding board or a shoulder to cry on - they can get that from friends and family.

🙏 They're desperately looking for an expert to help guide them, and to discover real solutions to real problems.

I see coaching as a partnership, but with the coach setting the rules of engagement.

🔥 Effective coaching involves using a proven and evidence-based framework, alongside the coach's skill and expertise, in order to provide practical strategies and concepts that make a real and positive difference to the client's life.

If you want to build your resilience and reduce stress, do these things more often:

🔸 Be comfortable being uncomfortable

Accept that things will go wrong - because they will. See obstacles and set-backs as PART of the plan.

🔸 Practise mindfulness

Consciously focus on the present and the process. When you do this, you're not worrying about the future or dwelling on the past.

🔸 Respond rather than react

Slow down and nurture the rational part of your brain, rather than the emotional part. This allows you to make better decisions and exhibit better behaviours.

🔸 Do regular exercise

Schedule enjoyable exercise into your routine. Engaging in physical activity increases serotonin and dopamine, increasing mental wellbeing.

🔸 See things as a challenge, not a threat

When faced with a problem or difficulty, turn it into an opportunity to learn and to show off your skills. When you do this habitually, you start to look forward to more challenges.

Are you a perfectionist? Do you need everything you do to be flawless? Do you expect others to have the same attention to detail as you? If so, you may be suffering from perfectionism, and holding yourself back from achieving what you want.

Perfectionism is not a good thing. Expecting things to be perfect leads to frustration and disappointment. Strive for excellence instead.

Here's the ONE thinking habit that will have the greatest positive impact on your mindset and success in life.

After 16 years of coaching, I've identified this thought pattern as the one that moves the needle the most, and gets my clients going forward.

In our mindset sessions, clients will often give me examples of their self-talk around difficult problems, such as:

🔴 "I'm stressed and I can't handle this anymore" (blunt statement)

🔴 "Should I change my career?" (yes/no question)

🔴 "Why can't I stick to my exercise plan?" (rhetorical why question)

These thoughts are a dead-end and don't lead you anywhere.

The first step is to recognise and label these thinking habits as unhelpful, and then to re-frame or follow up with:

✅ HOW/WHAT QUESTIONS

For example:

🔵 "What strategies can I put in place to manage stress better?"

🔵 "What kind of work do I want to be doing?"

🔵 "How can I create a sustainable exercise plan?"

You won't always find the magic answers straight away, but habitually asking how/what questions automatically gets you thinking about possible options and solutions to problems and challenges.

What are you waiting for? There will never be a perfect time to start towards your dreams. The perfect time is now.

In 2024, whether you make resolutions, write down goals, create plans, or none of that, the most important thing is to have intention.

Intention to live according to your own values.

Intention to move towards what you want in your life.

Intention to live and engage in the moment as much as possible.

Sometimes you don't get what you want, and sometimes you exceed your own expectations, but if you live intentionally, you'll always be where you should be.

Do you tend to ruminate?

Do you often have the same thoughts over and over?

Rumination generally leads you to a worse state of mind.

You're the creator of your own thoughts, so you have the power to dismiss any thought that may enter your head. You can choose not to pay attention to it.

As some thoughts don't lead you anywhere constructive, you can dismiss them as unimportant.

You are not ignoring your problems or living in denial, as you can't solve problems when you’re not in a healthy state of mind. The time to solve problems is not when you're ruminating, but when you’re in a good mood, when your thinking is rational.

You don’t need to carry worrying thoughts around all the time, and when you can learn to let go of them, you'll find yourself living more in the moment, and feeling a sense of 'lightness' and well-being.

This is 'mindfulness', and involves using all your senses (sight, smell, touch, hearing, taste) to savour what's around you right now.

You can't be "fully" mindful all the time, but the more of these moments you have, the happier you will be.
