This Mother’s Day, we’re celebrating care, kindness and giving back 💐

A few weeks ago, members of our Auckland Deposits and Reverse Mortgage teams spent the day volunteering at Mercy Hospice. They toured the hospice, met the amazing people behind the scenes, and learned more about the compassionate palliative care Mercy provides to individuals and families across central Auckland.

The team got hands‑on, creating handmade butterflies for Mercy’s Bereavement Service and making candles to be sold in Mercy Hospice shops to help raise funds.

Inspired by the experience, the team have also organised an internal Mother’s Day prize‑draw raffle, with employee‑donated gifts bundled into prize packs to raise further funds for Mercy Hospice.

Mother’s Day is a time to recognise the mums in our lives, and this felt like a meaningful way to connect that celebration with supporting an organisation that shows so much care to families every day.

Thank you to Mercy Hospice for welcoming our team, and to everyone who helped make this initiative possible.

We’re proud to be continuing our support of Tātai Whetū Waitaha for another year – a programme that uses sport and physical wellbeing to help develop young people across Waitaha, including Mid Canterbury.

With funding provided by the Heartland Trust, the programme connects athletes with practical, holistic support (from mindset and wellbeing to nutrition and strength & conditioning), helping them grow as people and as athletes.

One of those athletes is Reo, a dedicated karate‑ka from Christchurch, who’s experienced significant growth over the past year through the programme.

The Heart of It: a story 150 years in the making 📖✨

To help bring Heartland’s history to life, we created a commemorative book based on original interviews with more than 40 former and current employees, directors, customers and stakeholders across Aotearoa and Australia.

The Heart of It: A New Zealand story of resilience, aspiration and doing things differently captures the moments, people and courage that shaped Heartland – from our earliest days in Ashburton to the specialist bank we are today.

It’s a story of resilience, determination, community, and the big ambition that continues to guide us into the future.

A special thank you to the wonderful team at Blackwell & Ruth for helping us bring this story to life.

If you’re interested in knowing about where we’ve come from, and what’s guided us for 150 years, The Heart of It is a great place to start.

Debt Awareness Week is a reminder that while debt can help enable important life decisions, it can also cause real stress.

New research commissioned by DebtManagers for New Zealand’s first Debt Awareness Week shows 21% of people aged 60+ are currently struggling with debt, and 27% say debt has mostly caused stress or difficulty. Encouragingly, almost half have spoken to someone about it.

This reflects what our Reverse Mortgage team see every day. In 2025, debt consolidation was one of the most common reasons customers used a reverse mortgage – including paying off a small existing mortgage that required monthly repayments.

“It helps so many people. I’ve had customers come back saying a weight has been lifted – they didn’t realise how much debt was worrying them.” – Joan, Reverse Mortgages

While we know a reverse mortgage is not for everyone, for some older Kiwis, a reverse mortgage can be one way to reduce financial pressure while continuing to live in their home.
