As the winter chill sets in, many of us are pulling out the electric blankets to stay cosy. But before you click that switch, Fire and Emergency NZ (FENZ) warns that faulty electric blankets can contribute to the 17% spike in devastating house fires every winter.

FENZ advises to only use electric blankets to warm the bed before you get in and always ensure they are switched off before you go to sleep.

Maintaining them is also hugely important. To start, check for 'hotspots'. Put the blanket on high for 10 minutes, switch it off, and run your hand over it. If you find any, the wires are damaged so stop using it.

Have your blanket checked by a registered electrician every year or replace it every five years with a newer model that features built-in overheat protection.

Nothing beats crawling into a beautifully warm bed on a freezing cold night, but true comfort means knowing your home is at a lesser risk of fire.

According to Stuff's Health of the Nation survey, a staggering 70% of Kiwis have delayed essential medical care over the past year, including GP visits, dental work, eye exams, and mental health support.

These figures highlight the critical importance of having health insurance to help alleviate financial barriers when medical needs arise - especially to avoid minor issues becoming worse and therefore more costly down the track.

For businesses, providing health insurance as an employee benefit is a vital way to safeguard staff wellbeing and ensure a healthier, more supported workforce. Staff are less likely to take less sick leave and get back to work earlier if they can access the medical care they need straight away.

Electric vehicles are seeing a massive surge in popularity right now as drivers look for any escape from the crushing fuel crisis. But while you might skip the pump, you won’t skip the premium—a shortage of local repair networks means insuring a new EV in New Zealand can cost up to 38% more than a petrol car.

With supply chain volatility and soaring material costs, a standard 5% Contract Works insurance buffer is no longer enough to protect your build from being dangerously underinsured.

Waiting until the slab is poured to secure coverage can also backfire, leading to steep late penalties or outright denials from insurers.

Be upfront on your application form. Not declaring any current (pre-existing) medical conditions, or what might be considered dangerous hobbies/pastimes or habits, could void your policy and prevent you from receiving a payout.

June is a popular month for insurance policy renewals.

Your broker will work with you to go through the renewal process as well as the paperwork.

For businesses, it is timely to think about how your staffing levels have shifted, if there are any big operational changes you have made, and what assets you may have purchased as key factors that affect your insurance cover. As the costs of replacing or repairing you assets are likely to have increased you should also consider an uplift in your cover levels should you need to make a claim.
