This Tuesday during Arendalsuka, we had the pleasure of welcoming Norway’s Minister of Fisheries and Ocean Policy, Marianne Sivertsen Næss, to Gard’s new Saga office in Arendal, a recently opened addition to Gard’s headquarters, where a historic sawmill site has been transformed into a modern workplace.

During the visit, the Minister had the opportunity to see the restored section of the original timber warehouse, before Gard CEO Rolf Thore Roppestad presented Gard and Skuld's joint consultation response to Norway’s new maritime strategy.

The visit ended with a fantastic journey back to Arendal city centre, as Marianne Sivertsen Næss and members of her team were given a ride in Rolf Thore Roppestad’s own classic wooden boat, built by his great-grandfather in 1965.

Thank you for the visit and for the opportunity to discuss the future of Norway’s maritime sector.

What a start to this year's Arendalsuka!

On Monday, we kicked off the week with Paradokset Arendal (The Paradox Arendal), hosted by Norwegian Shipowners' Association (Norges Rederiforbund), OSM Thome and Gard. The event featured great discussions on what it will take for Norway to remain a country where world-leading companies continue to grow and stay.

On Tuesday, we continued the conversations with two engaging maritime events:

🔹 Maritim minglefrokost: Muligheter og utfordringer for norsk maritim næring (Maritime networking breakfast: Opportunities and challenges facing Norway's maritime industry)

This event was hosted by Gard and YoungShip Sorlandet, and featured discussions on recruitment and opportunities in the maritime industry. The event also marked the signing of an MoU between Gard and YoungShip, establishing Gard as a YoungShip Global Partner.

🔹 Sjøfolk i kryssilden – hvordan trygger vi de som holder verdenshandelen i gang? (Seafarers in the crossfire: How do we protect those who keep global trade moving?)

This event brought together experts from shipping, medicine and insurance to discuss the risks facing today's seafarers. Attendees also gained insights from a new report highlighting some of the most common challenges and risks associated with life at sea.

Last week, Gard took part in TENK Tech Camp in Kristiansand - a free initiative for young women aged 13 to 19 designed to spark curiosity and interest in technology.

This year, our workshop focused on AI and prompting. Guided by our team Håvard Wangensteen, Andreas Tiller, Nina Samuelsen Schüller, Liam Ribe, F***y Varga and Filip Naley, the participants were challenged to build their own games using ChatGPT - experimenting with prompts and seeing how different instructions shaped the results. No prior experience needed, just curiosity and a willingness to try.

A big thank you to TENK - Tech Network for Women, our fellow partners Å Energi, Kartverket, Sparebanken Norge, Webstep, Netsecurity, and most importantly all the participants for two inspiring days in Kristiansand. We look forward to coming back. 🙌

25 July is World Drowning Prevention Day - a timely reminder that in cold water, the window for survival can be less than 15 minutes.

The body's response to cold water immersion is more complex than most people realise, and knowing what to do, and what not to do, in those first critical moments can make all the difference. Our article walks through what happens to the body and the steps you should know before an emergency occurs at sea.
