Preparing your pitch deck? then have a read.

Thank you GrowthAfrica - Growth Frontiers once again

GET THE FACTS STRAIGHT: COMMON PITCH DECK MISTAKES
Details, facts, and numbers can make or break your investment deal.

Zambian Investment analyst Nsamwa Mwale from Hivos Impact Investments at hivosimpactinvestments.com shares 5 shortcomings entrepreneurs make with pitch decks.

1. Complex pitch decks.
"I have gone through 'pitch decks' that are 50-100 slides and is centred around what the market potential and what could be, rather than articulating what you are doing to take over the market. Simple, clear, and concise is all we ask for. Make me want to know more. "

2. Get the problem right
"An entrepreneur needs clearly explain the problem they are trying to solve and why this is relevant to the masses. Investors need to see that reflected in the pitch deck."

3. Unrealistic goals
"A company with a historical growth rate of 2-5% anticipating a 300% growth with no clear indication of how this will happen. It comes off as ambitious than realistic."

4. Missing growth projections
"If you are pitching to an investor, you need to know how much you need to grow your business to the next level and express this in a clear growth strategy or projection."

5. No industry expertise in team
" If you are getting into an expert-based field, such as insurance, for instance, this should be reflected in the team expertise. Who is driving your expertise? Who is the grey hair of the company? Why did you venture into this field?”

As an entrepreneur, what have been some of your key learnings on pitch decks?

Thank you GrowthAfrica - Growth Frontiers for opening up your platform and allowing us to share our insights.

Our investment Analyst Nsamwa Mwale shares insights on what we look out for when analyzing a pitch deck. Read on.

HIVOS IMPACT INVESTORS TAKE ON PITCH DECKS
Southern Africa is throwing their hat in the ring!

We share power tips on enriching your pitch decks by Nsamwa Mwale, an impact Investment analyst at Hivos Impact Investments.

1. The business model.
"To be clear, a business model is not a business plan. A business model is the foundation of a company – It explains the main idea of a business and how it will generate profit, impact (or both). As an investment analyst, I need to understand how the venture will develop a product and bring it to market for profit or social impact from your pitch deck.

2. The product/service
"We zoom into the product/service you are bringing to market. How unique or innovative is your product/service – what gives you the winning advantage."

3. Traction
"How long has the company been in existence. Is it early stage, has the business concept been validated? I would also like to see the unique value proposition come alive and how many people have adopted it.

4. Growth Plan
"A growth plan is the strategy that enables a business to plan and track growth in revenues and impact. We need to see the vision of the company over the next 3-5 years. We want to see how an investment will build the business over the next stages of growth."

5. Financials
"Know your numbers. That's just it. Have at least some basic knowledge of the financial results or projections of your business."

6. Team
"It is vital to have entrepreneurial skill sets in the team, other than the founder. The team should be able to step up if the founder is not there.

7. Partners
"It is important to see who your partners and suppliers are. This helps build confidence in an entrepreneur as it shows stability."

8. The target market
"I look into the market potential of your offering: Who is your target market? How big is your target market? What percentage of the market are you targeting? How will you reach your targeted market?
