The blockade of the Strait of Hormuz due to the conflict with Iran is causing serious disruption in global fertilizer markets.

Key products such as urea, ammonia and sulphur are particularly exposed, as significant volumes move through the Gulf region. Delays in shipments, higher energy costs and uncertainty over availability are pushing fertilizer prices sharply higher.

This may lead to reduced fertilizer use, lower crop yields and increased pressure on global food prices, especially in import-dependent markets.

Vietnam pepper exports show a strong start to 2026.

According to preliminary VPSA data, total exports reached 66,350 tons by the end of March, including 55,322 tons of black pepper and 11,018 tons of white pepper, with a total value of USD 430 million.

Compared to the same period last year, volumes increased by 39.2% and value by 31.7%, confirming a clear recovery in export activity.

The United States remained the largest market with 16,859 tons (+63.9%), followed by China at 8,563 tons (+321.0%), now the second-largest destination.

Other key markets included the UAE (3,182 tons, +15.4%), India (2,456 tons, -27.1%), and the Philippines (2,383 tons, +46.9%).

Asia continues to drive demand, accounting for 46% of total exports, followed by the Americas (28%) and Europe (20%).

Middle East tensions impacting freight and commodity prices

Van der Does Spice Brokers continues to closely monitor the escalating geopolitical situation in the Middle East and its impact on global logistics and commodity markets.

Rising oil prices and increased security risks around key maritime corridors, including the Strait of Hormuz, the Red Sea and the Suez Canal, are already resulting in higher bunker costs and firming ocean freight rates. Major shipping and logistics providers have furthermore reported operational disruptions in parts of the Gulf region, including temporary warehouse closures and reduced operational capacity in the UAE, Oman and Qatar following government safety measures.

While contingency plans have been activated across the logistics sector, supply chain disruptions and longer transit uncertainties cannot be excluded.

Consequently, upward pressure on commodity prices on a CNF basis is expected in the coming weeks, primarily driven by increasing freight and logistics costs.
