From 1 January 2027, employers will face an additional 12% employer levy on petrol, diesel and hybrid passenger cars made available to employees for private use or commuting.

A petrol car with a catalogue value of €40,000 could result in an additional employer cost of €4,800 per year.

Key points to consider:

• Commuting counts as private use.
• Zero-emission passenger cars are excluded.
• Transitional protection may apply to existing vehicles.
• Rental cars, car-sharing arrangements and replacement vehicles may also be relevant under certain conditions.

The measure affects more than just the company car fleet. Employers should also review their mobility policies, contracts and payroll processes.
