Raise Problem Solvers, Not Just Exam Passers

We often tell children:

“Go to school. Get good grades. Find a good job.”
But what if, alongside academic success, we also taught them how to think independently, solve problems and create value?

Entrepreneurial thinking doesn't mean every child must grow up to own a business.
It simply means teaching children to become more curious, resourceful, responsible and solution-oriented.

Here are a few simple exercises parents and teachers can begin adopting:

1. The “How Can We Solve This?” Exercise

When there's a small problem, don't always rush to provide the answer.

Ask:

“What do you think we can do about it?”

Whether it's a broken toy, a missing school item or a problem in the classroom, encourage the child to think through possible solutions.

2. Give Them a Small Budget

For example:

“Here is ₦2,000. Plan what we need to buy for this small project.”

Let them compare prices, make choices and understand that money requires planning.
They don't have to get everything right.
The lesson is in the thinking.

3. Turn Everyday Problems into Challenges

Instead of simply complaining:

“This room is always messy.”

Try:

“What system can we create to keep this room organized?”

Let them design the solution.
A chart. A box system. Labels. A routine.
That's problem-solving.

4. Let Them Create Something People Can Use

It could be:
• Helping to organize books for younger children.
• Creating greeting cards.
• Making simple snacks.
• Growing small plants.
• Designing something useful with recycled materials.

Then ask:

“Who would find this useful, and why?”
This introduces one of the most important entrepreneurial ideas:
Value begins with solving someone's problem.

5. Encourage Small Decision-Making

Give children age-appropriate opportunities to make choices and experience the consequences.
Let them plan.
Let them try.
Let them make small mistakes.

Then ask:

“What would you do differently next time?”

Because confidence doesn't come from always being given the right answer.
It grows when children learn that they can think, decide, adapt and try again.
The goal is bigger than raising entrepreneurs.

We are raising future adults.
Adults who can see opportunities.
Adults who can solve problems.
Adults who can manage resources.
Adults who understand that they don't always have to wait for someone else to create the solution.

And sometimes, that thinking begins with something as simple as asking a child:

“So… how do you think we can solve this?”

Entrepreneurial thinking is not something children suddenly develop when they become adults. It starts with the little decisions, responsibilities and opportunities they are exposed to while growing up.

Navigating Regulatory Trust: Know Before You Invest

We're in an age where "opportunities" arrive daily — in your DMs, on WhatsApp, at family gatherings. Some are real. Many aren't. And the difference often comes down to a few minutes of checking, before commitment.

Here's a simple rule of thumb: run from any offer promising unusually high returns, especially per month.

Legitimate investment returns are almost always quoted per annum (p.a.) — a yearly figure. If someone is promising you 20%, 30%, or more per month, that's not an aggressive investment strategy. That's a warning sign. Real markets don't work that way, and any company telling you otherwise is either misinformed or misleading you.

Before you commit to any offer, do this:

Visit the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) Nigeria's website and search the company's name in their register of licensed operators. If a company is legitimately authorized to manage or solicit investment funds, it will be listed. If it isn't, that's your answer — no matter how convincing the pitch sounded.

This isn't about being paranoid. It's about being deliberate with something you worked hard for.
