On this Workers' Day today, I want us to deeply reflect on what work truly means to us.
Outside the stress of daily waking up early against our ever-pressing desire to rest more on the bed, the lack of time to have some pleasures and social engagements with friends and families, the ever tiredness and body pains at workplace, the pressure of meeting very high deadlines/targets, the shouts, reprimands from Management , queries, suspensions and other unwanted emotional instability that comes with working (work) everyday; what else does work truly mean to us?
Let’s have a deep thought on these:
- What else could have been our personal value without working (work)?
- How relevant could we have been to ourselves, our families and society?
- How else could we have achieved experience-based personal development?
- What could have been the society perception about us without work or working?
- How could we have been able to continuously meet our personal responsibility without inconveniencing others?
- How could we have been hopeful or sure that we are to see or experience the kind of future we aspired?
- What worth or value could we have been sure to leave behind for our next generation?
- What kind of exposure, class of relationships and elite groups could we have been proud of belonging?
- The list goes on and on and on etc…..
I will undoubtedly agree with any rational worker that Work/Working is stressful, painful, pressure, uninteresting, socially disconnecting and generally uneasy.
But looking at the pains that comes from the flip side, i.e not working at all, working and working hard is a GOOD PAIN that comes with numerous Values.
