I KNEW MY HUSBAND WAS LYING WHEN HIS “OFFICE” SAID THEY’D NEVER HEARD OF HIM.
I decided to surprise him and, for the first time in a long while, stopped by his workplace.
He was always busy, often stayed late, and sometimes didn’t even answer his phone. I kept telling myself it was just a demanding project.
That day, I grabbed his favorite coffee and headed to the office—the address he himself had once given me.
A tall building, glass doors, security—everything looked solid.
“I’m here to see my husband,” I said with a smile at the reception desk and gave his name.
The receptionist frowned.
“I’m sorry… who?”
I repeated it.
She checked something on her computer, then called over a colleague.
A minute later, the two of them were looking at me with the same expression.
“No one by that name has ever worked here,” she said calmly.
I laughed.
“You must be mistaken. He’s been here for over a year.”
“No,” she shook her head. “We would know.”
My hands went cold.
I stepped outside, took out my phone, and called him.
“Are you at work?” I asked, trying to sound calm.
“Yes, of course,” he replied without hesitation.
I swallowed.
“I’m nearby… I brought you lunch. Can you come down?”
There was a pause on the other end.
“I can’t right now, I’m in a meeting,” he said quickly—and hung up.
At that moment, the doors in front of me opened.
I turned around.
A man in a suit was walking toward me.
“Excuse me,” he said, studying me carefully as he showed me a photo on his tablet. “Are you looking for this man?”
I froze.
“Yes… that’s my husband.”
The man hesitated for a second.
Then said quietly,
“Then there’s something you should know…”
