Are overdue payments slowing down your business? Is your money tied down with your customers? You're not alone. This issue is common among businesses of all sizes.

But why does this issue arise?

I'll outline a few reasons and offer tips to fix each problem

1 You're not using invoicing software to bill your customers.
If you're still using paper or spreadsheet invoices. Stop.

Upgrade to electronic invoicing. It will help you bring in revenue fast. With it, you can customise invoices and receipts. Schedule reminders. Automate invoices. Also provide customers with their outstanding balances.

2 You don't send invoices as soon as you finish a job.
Delay in billing a customer prevents income from rolling in.
Whenever you're done with a customer's work, send an invoice immediately. In fact schedule the invoice to send on the date you'll finish the work. This way you won't forget to do the task.

3 You send the invoice to the wrong customer.
You may have two customers with the same first name or last name. And thinking it's the actual customer you've sent the invoice to, it ends up with the wrong customer. You wait for long just to get a reply/payment from the customer.
Triple check the invoice before you send it to ensure you have the correct customer's info.

4 You don't send the invoice to the preferred channel of the customer.
One-size-fits-all operation won't help you get your money on time. Instead you'll have lots of pending invoices because the customer won't get to see and read the invoice and want to pay.
Let the customer choose where they want you to send the invoice –email, WhatsApp or SMS.

5 You don't include late payment policy in the invoice.
What will happen if a customer pays late? Is there a penalty for late payment?
Establish clear consequences for late payments – late fees or interest, in the invoice so that the customer will be aware and take you seriously.

These are just a few reasons customers don't pay on time.
