Imo Government has denied allegations of the inflation of the voter register of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in the state with fictitious names.

The State’s Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr Declan Emelumba said this while addressing newsmen in Owerri on Friday.

Emelumba was reacting to allegations of inflation of names and figures of registered voters leveled against the state by the spokesperson of the Conference of United Political Parties (CUPP), Ikenga Ugochinyere.

He said that Ugochinyere alleged inflation of figures and registration of fictitious names at the Omuma ward of the state Governor, Hope Uzodimma.

The Commissioner described the allegations as reckless, irresponsible and seditious, adding that they could only have come from a jaundiced, mischievous mindset.

Bishops of the Catholic Church in Nigeria have offered to continually beseech God for peace to reign in Imo.

President of the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria, His Grace, Most Rev. Lucius Ugorji, said this at a lunch organised by the Imo Government in honour of the College of Catholic Bishops in Owerri, on Wednesday.

Ugorji, who is also the Catholic Archbishop of the Owerri Metropolitan Province, said that the prayers were necessary to enable Gov. Hope Uzodimma continue with his efforts in renewal of road infrastructure.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the bishops were currently holding their 2022 Second Plenary at Holy Trinity Catholic Cathedral, Orlu, in Orlu council area of Imo.

Ugorji thanked the governor for the ‘solid job’ done on the 35km Owerri-Orlu dual carriage way and the first phase of the Owerri-Okigwe road which were inaugurated by President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday.

He said, ”the dualised Owerri-Orlu road was a beautiful sight to behold,” adding, ”their journey from Orlu to Owerri through the newly reconstructed road was as smooth as never before.”

He further thanked the governor for hosting the bishops and assured him of their unalloyed spiritual interventions.

President Muhammadu Buhari has expressed appreciation to the people of Imo State for their hospitality as he commissioned some legacy projects of the State Governor, Hope Uzodimma saying that the governor has written his own histroy through his efforts developing the state.

President Buhari, who spoke today, September 13 when he commissioned the Owerri/Orlu dual carriage, Owerri/Okigwe road and the renovated House of Assembly Complex, said that the Imo State government has made remarkable progress with infrastructure in three years.

“I am delighted to be back in Imo State – the Eastern Heartland – to commission a number of projects executed by the administration of His Excellency, Governor Hope Uzodimma.

President Muhammadu Buhari has claimed his administration has done “extremely well”, despite the limited resources available to it.

Buhari made this remark during a stakeholders’ meeting at the Imo State Government House in Owerri, the state capital.

The president inaugurated the Owerri-Orlu Road, phase one of the Owerri-Okigwe Road and the state House of Assembly complex rebuilt by the administration of the state governor, Hope Uzodimma.

He said his government was able to achieve much despite the scarce resources at his disposal.

“This administration has done extremely well. I had to say it because those who are supposed to say it are not doing so. I don’t know why,” the President said.

He extolled his regime for dislodging Boko Haram terrorists in the North East and tackling infrastructural decay which he said he inherited from the Peoples Democratic Party’s administration in 2015.

He commended Uzodimma for inviting him for the second time in a year to inaugurate projects executed by his administration.

He promised to continue to support all states irrespective of political affiliations, to deliver infrastructure assets.

Federal government has promised to support widows, youths, physically challenged persons, and vulnerable people in Imo State with economic support.

Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development Sadiya Umar Farouq gave the assurance at the weekend during the flag-off of disbursement of cash grants alongside the digitized payment for conditional cash transfer.

She said 3,894 beneficiaries across the 27 local government areas of the state were selected to receive a twenty thousand Naira one-off Cash Grant for Vulnerable Groups while about 4,738 beneficiaries were selected for the government enterprise empowerment programme interest free loans.

Farouq said, “This is a programme designed by President Muhammadu Buhari administration for vulnerable and low-income Nigerians who are involved in some sort of commercial activity or capacity but have never had the opportunity to access loans.”

It is meant to give priority to the most vulnerable in our society, especially widows, youth, disabled and the displaced amongst others”.
