Cashless Benue Markets

The new Naira Policy is negatively impacting activities in the Benue Food Market.

From grounded markets to minimal transactions due to cash crunch and poor electronic money services.

Tersoo Ortom (Jato-Aka, Kwande LGA), Abaji Gowen (Ugba, Logo LGA) and Sughnen Anema (Gboko LGA), have insights about the situation in their areas.

Prices of commodities have crashed, with almost no buyers and stalemate in transactions. This is in the face of majority of locals having no bank accounts.

The following is Jato Aka today

Bambara nut: 40k
Rice 30k
Cassava flakes (Kpor) 7k
Sorghum 17k and 18k
Ugba has not seen much action, particularly, the grains section.
It's Kpor-yo (yams chips) 10k and 11k
Kpor Logo (cassava flakes) 9k and 10k

But Bambara nut, all bags are size 28'

Monday, January 23 In Benue

There are oranges everywhere. But there are fewer buyers. And so, prices are low.

In Vandeikya, Konshisha, Ushongo, Gboko, Ukum, Tarka, Buruku and Gwer East, ripe oranges dot the landscape.

Major commodities this week remain yams and kpoo (cassava flakes), sorghum, rice and Bambara nut.

Tor Donga, Afia, Ayilamo, Tse-Kucha and Akpagher are some of the markets to look out for today.

Other major markets are Ichor, Ikyobo and Buruku.

Tomorrow will be Igbor and Lessel.

Sesame

Indices have shown that there is significant drop in the supply of sesame from Benue State this season.

Ikpayongo, one of the major sesame markets in the state I'd not boasting of much, with a bowl of sesame trading for 33.5k. This represents a significant increase in price from what was obtainable in December, 2022.

Daudu, Gbajimba, Naka and For Donga are other markets for sesame.

At Naka, commodities are trading as follows:

Sorghum- 9.5k (red)/per bowl

Rice - 12.6k (parboiled)/tin of 24 mudules. Naka holds today, with the next marking holding on Monday, next week.

Other markets today are Tyowanye, Tsar, Gbem, Aliade and Akerior.

Akpu, yams, Garri, sweet potatoes, sorghum, Soyabeans, rice, are some of the commodities available.
