Soil is the foundation.

If the soil is weak, crops will be weak.
If the soil is alive, crops will be alive.

Not all soils are the same.

Sandy soils: light, quick to drain, good for groundnut and watermelon.

Clay soils:heavy, water loving, good for rice.

Loamy soils:rich and balanced, best for most crops.

Laterite soils:red and poor, must be improved before planting.

Knowing your soil is half the harvest.

Preparation is the other half.

Clear the soil of debris
Loosen it with a tractor or hoe.

Flat beds for maize, Ridges or heaps for yam and cassava.

Feed the soil with Compost, Manure, Green cover crops.

Remember that soil is not sand, Soil is living.

So respect the soil, prepare it well.
And it will reward you at harvest.

So in our group on Whatsapp where a community of ORGANIC farmers learn how to grow what we eat,

More exploration were done about which organic pesticides we could use in addition to Neem botanicals and pawpaw leaf was mentioned.

As usual, I did a little finding further about it with different ratios and I found that,

The bitter juice inside the leaves carries compounds that drive away insects and slow down crop diseases. Why they reported mostly dried leaves to be effective.

I tried to see whether fresh lives too could work.

Remember,

My goal is to make farming simple so people don't have to run out of options.
And I found out the the fresh leaves are as effective as the dried ones.

So here is a simple way to prepare it.

Take 1 kilogram of fresh papaya leaves, crush or pound them until they become aqueous,

then soak them in 2 liters of clean water. Leave this mixture overnight so the juice can come out fully.

In the morning, strain it well, then add more clean water until you have 5 liters of liquid.

Finally, add one spoon of mild soap to help the pesticide stick to the leaf for them to work on the pests.

This pesticide is effective against caterpillars, aphids, grasshoppers, and even fungal problems like mildew and leaf spot. Use it twice a week or after heavy rain.

You must be careful not to overuse it.
Be faithful to the ratio of 1 kilogram of leaves to 5 liters of water.

Remember always to wear a protective glove when preparing it, and avoid spraying when crops are almost ready for harvest, because the bitter taste may remain, not everyone would want to taste it.

So, papaya is not just for sweet fruit it leaves are a gift for farmers who want to protect crops the organic way.

The first time I learned about onions; how it's grown and harvested for market and seeds production was in Jos.

It was there I learnt something about onion many farmers don’t talk about much-and that’s the life cycle of onions.

Now, let me take you through it in a way that will make it stick with you for good. Let this be an organic feeling 😂

Some time ago in 2021, I got curious after some months working with an onion farmer close to where I was taking my industrial training.

I noticed that onions grown from seeds hardly produced seeds of their own.
But when he planted plant cut bulbs, they gave us flowers and seeds.

This was strange but after his explanation and my "fall back to literature" what he said and the things I saw made so much sense.

So here is the point, onions are not like maize or pepper. They’re biennial. That means they grow in two stages over two growing seasons.

In the first season, when you plant onions from seed, the plant uses all its energy to grow its roots and bulb. That’s what it’s meant to do.
It has no interest in flowering yet. It’s not ready to make seeds. So now you all know that onion is a perfect example of a biennial crop.

But here’s where it gets interesting...

If you take that matured bulb from the first season, cut it, and replant it, the onion thinks:
“I’ve already stored energy. It’s time to complete my life cycle.” shin wanger je o? 😆

What does it do next?
It sends out a flower stalk, blooms, and gives you seeds.

That’s how onions work.

It is like the plant has a memory. No be only human beings de remember. Shin wanger je oo?

Planting from seed is like raising a baby. It’s not yet ready for reproduction.
But planting from a bulb is like calling back an adult, it knows what to do next.

So if your goal is to harvest onions to sell, you want big bulbs, grow from seeds

But if your goal is to produce your own seed, don’t expect that from your seed grown onions in their first season.
You have to let them finish their bulb stage, and then replant the bulb to get the flowers and seed.

This is how simple it is to get seeds but most people overlook it. 😂

And if you leave the bulb grown from seeds to grow till it flowers and produce seeds you will wait till Jesus comes and it won't produce seeds.

That’s because onions need something called VERNALIZATION, it's a kind of cold shock, it tells the onion it’s time to bloom. Bulbs that went through a full season have this better than new seeds.

So when next you wonder why your onions won’t give you seeds, remember, it's not weather or variety of the onion, it's the lifespan.

This is basic biology and I am here to share with you organically.

Okay, go and grow your onions for seeds now.

There are a few things I need to tell you about my knowledge in farming..

My farming method is different, not strange but the path less taken.

I didn't invent it, I'm only a fan of it and I want to stand with it. I believe it holds the key to solving not only human health problems,

It also has the potential to curb the climate change problems caused by global warming.

If you would take time to go through my page and activities on the farm as I do upload here,

You would notice that I don't just show how a yield comes to play on your farm,

I show also in practice the things you can do especially on the soil for that to be possible

I know for a fact that soil is the brain box, the power house behind every clean and bountiful yield in farming.

And so, it must be by all means, well taken care of.

Since soil is a natural thing with life in it, it cannot be taken care of with synthetic chemicals like Fertilizers or herbicides and pesticides,

It must have to be taken care of using natural materials which is why I try my best to tell you how to achieve such a feat.

The soil as a living component of the ecosystem doesn't work in isolation, it needs living microbes for it to be held intact and maintain its structure.

That is why we apply things from nature, the things I like to call organic that do not and can not break this link so the soil continues to give it's best.

One good thing about soil is,

When you give it the right care it deserves, it gives you back, the yield you crave and this last a longer time.

So you need to understand this and try your best not to hasten the soil

It comes alive and remains so when you give it time to utilise the food you give it so that it can in turn feed your crops.

Now when you want me to guide you through farming, understand that I don't use chemicals which are a poison not only to humans but also to the soil.

My system of farming is for healthy life and eco-friendly environment.

Climate change is my problem and I want to contribute my quota as a farmer in solving it.
