Business name is not the same as a company — know the difference
A lot of Nigerian entrepreneurs are building amazing businesses — but with the wrong expectations.
You may think you’re running a company...
but you might only have registered a business name.
That’s not a bad thing — as long as you know what it means.
A business name is you trading under a brand.
A company (Ltd) is a legal person — separate from you.
Both are valid, but they serve different purposes. Let me share a real-life case:
A client who had run a cleaning agency for four years applied for a government grant. Staff, contracts, registered with CAC — the full hustle.
The response came back:
“Only companies are eligible.”
She was shocked. She thought her CAC registration meant she had a company. It didn’t.
Here’s the practical difference:
With a business name, you and the business are one.
With a company, you and the business are separate.
So if someone sues a business name, they’re suing you. But if they sue your company, it’s the company that stands in court — not your personal account.
Also:
Companies can raise capital, issue shares, and attract serious B2B deals.
Investors and big clients often prefer working with companies.
Banks generally treat companies as more structured and credible.
But let’s be clear: this isn’t about making one better than the other. It’s about asking: Which is right for the stage you’re in?
Start with a business name? That’s fine. But as your vision grows, your structure should grow too.
So — let’s reason together: did you register a business name or a company, and why? Ever considered upgrading?
