Few days ago...
I walked into a very beautiful eatery, well arranged, smelt like a flower garden and the air conditioning made it feel like I walked in from a furnace.
I did not expect to walk out irritated.
The security man who welcomed and opened the door for me was immaculately dressed. He greeted me with a warm smile to which I responded.
I didn't want to eat—all I needed was some peace and quiet, so I ordered water (I'm on a soda-free month).
The waiter reminded me of a flight attendant from one of James Bond's movies; I think it was the way she walked.
I decided to leave after around 30 minutes of chilling because it would be awkward to drink only a bottle of water for too long.
The counter was east of where I sat and that's where everything went south.
“What did you have, sir?”She asked.
“Why are you addressing me as 'sir'? Do I appear to be that old?” I replied sarcastically. "I just had water", I added.
"Sir, your bill is 400 naira."
She nodded when I showed her the bottle (which said 100CL).
"𝘚𝘰𝘳𝘳𝘺 𝘰, 𝘯𝘢 𝘸𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘳 𝘐 𝘰𝘳𝘥𝘦𝘳 𝘧𝘰𝘳, 𝘯𝘰 𝘣𝘦 𝘧𝘶𝘦𝘭 𝘰", I was serious and didn't understand why she was smiling.
I gave her the money after about a minute of staring at her.
Just before I reached the door, for some reason, 𝘮𝘺 𝘤𝘩𝘦𝘴𝘵 𝘣𝘦𝘨𝘢𝘯 𝘵𝘰 𝘱𝘢𝘪𝘯 𝘮𝘦.
The security guard smiled as I walked to the door, but my chest ache prevented me from replying.
“Why did I pay 400 naira for 1 bottle water(100CL)? Is that not the price of 2 bags of sachet water (1000CL)?” I murmured.
Then it occurred to me that I had not paid for water.
I paid for the packaging...
We'll talk about packaging another time, I want you to focus on the value (water).
Value, in itself, is priceless!
Price is determined mostly by the value that's added and not necessarily the main offer.
Sachet water is 20 naira but when you put it in a bottle, it's 100 naira.
What changed?
That's exactly why the Eva bottle water that trended for a while had so many variants in price.
Digitally, value (mostly information-based) is almost free and the only payment it needs is attention—to PAY attention.
Here's what you want to do, get value - practice - refine - redefine.
The reason why some do not get value from their timeline (time online) is because the distractions they allow make it difficult for them to PAY attention...
Here are 3 important tips to help shut out distractions and focus on value:
✅ Unfollow and unfriend people who distract you from what you want to become. If you don't want to unfriend them, mute them!
✅ Deliberately follow and friend people who help you grow and are experts in your field.
✅ Tune your environment: I'm not just talking about physical environment, I'm also talking about your Facebook news feed, tik tok feed, youtube feed or whatever platform has been feeding you.
Sidenote: Ohh, did you just realize that social media is a digital canteen? Now you know why you're fed up, sounds like you just got served, right? 😂
The 3 tips listed above makes it easy for you to pay attention and get value from your timeline (time online).
You may never need a masterclass if you can effectively rinse and repeat those 3 tips.
Now? I'll head on to facebook and tell them I don't want to keep seeing a particular ad(vert) so I can easily pay attention.
What will you do?
I would love to know...
