Every HMO plan in Nigeria has exclusions. Pre-existing conditions. Dental. Optical. Maternity. Surgeries above a certain cost. Know what's excluded before you're standing in a hospital needing it. The time to ask is not when your staff is already on a drip.

✅ 𝟯. 𝗔𝘀𝗸 𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗮𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝘁 𝟮𝗮𝗺 — 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝘀𝗸𝗶𝗽
Who do you call in an emergency? Is pre-authorization needed before every visit? What happens on weekends and public holidays? If your HMO representative cannot answer this fluently and immediately, that hesitation is your answer.

A ₦25,000/year plan sounds affordable. But if the annual benefit limit is ₦150,000, a single admission for typhoid with complications will exhaust it. Always ask: what is the maximum payout per person, per year? Match it to your actual health risk.

✅ 𝟱. 𝗔𝘀𝗸 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘄𝗮𝗹 𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗯𝗲𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻 — get it in writing
Some HMOs offer low entry prices and significantly increase premiums at renewal — especially after your team has made claims. Ask: "What is your renewal pricing policy?" If they will not put it in writing, walk away. That reluctance is a policy.

That was all I had.

Six months before today I would never have dreamt been in that kind of room. Because I was not targeting room that size.

Last month I read something in 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗟𝗼𝗿𝗱𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗴𝘆 𝗯𝘆 𝗪𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗞𝗶𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗹 that stopped me cold.

The biggest companies don't grow by working harder at the same level. They grow by 𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 — choosing to operate in a bigger market tier.

So I asked myself one question: "What if I stopped going after small companies — and only targeted businesses with 100+ staff?"

Same hours. Same skill. Different ceiling.

𝟯 𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗽𝘀 𝗶𝗻 11 𝘄𝗲𝗲𝗸𝘀. 𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗺𝘆 𝗲𝘅𝗮𝗰𝘁 𝘀𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲.

I painfully stopped calling companies with fewer than 100 staff.

But because I had to create a new floor for myself.

Most people never get to big deals because they are always available for small ones.
When you make yourself unavailable for small — you start showing up differently for large.

I stopped sending generic emails and cold messages.
For every company I targeted, I spent between 10 to 30 minutes learning:
— What they do
— How many staff they have
— Where their staff are located (especially field teams)
— What their biggest operational challenges are

Then I wrote an email that was about 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗹𝗲𝗺 — not my product.

The email that got me into yesterday's meeting didn't mention my company until the third paragraph.
The first two paragraphs were about them.
That is why it got opened. That is why it got a reply.

𝗦𝘁𝗲𝗽 𝟯 — 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗱𝗲𝗮𝗹 𝗶𝘀 𝗮𝗹𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗱𝘆 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀.
Once I got the meeting, I treated the preparation like the deal was already signed and I just had to not ruin it.

I knew their industry.
I knew the specific challenges their HR team faces.
I knew the exact questions a CFO asks before approving a spend this size.
I had answers ready before the questions were asked.

When you walk into a room — virtual or physical — knowing more about the prospect's world than they expect you to know...
The dynamic shifts. 𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗻𝗼 𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗿 𝗮 𝘃𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗼𝗿. 𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗻 𝗮𝗱𝘃𝗶𝘀𝗲𝗿.

And advisers get deals. Vendors get compared on price.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲, 𝗯𝗲𝗰𝗮𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗮𝗹𝘄𝗮𝘆𝘀 𝗮𝘀𝗸:
Week 1 - 2 — Decided to change strategy. Set the new minimum. Identified 36 target companies.
Week 3 - 4 — Researched each one. Wrote personalized outreach. Sent 31 emails.
Week 5 - 7 — Got 8 replies. Booked 6 meetings. Three cancelled.
Week 8 - 10 — Two meetings happened. One became a ₦14 million close and the other ₦801K
Week 10 — The multinational meeting was booked.
Week 11 — Thursday. ₦27 million pitch. Decision pending but hopeful

77 days from a decision to ₦15 million closed — and ₦27 million in the pipeline.

This time last year I didn't believe I could do ₦15 million in 11 weeks. I definitely didn't believe I'd be in a ₦27 million conversation.

Not because I got lucky.
Because I stopped playing a game that was too small for where I wanted to go.

But here is what i have learned:

The moment you decide to operate at a different level — everything rearranges itself around that decision.

Nobody writes about this moment.

Your company is paying for an HMO.

Let me tell you what actually happened to a logistics company in Lagos last year.

Their operations manager — let's call him Chidi — had a severe migraine attack on a Wednesday evening. He had an HMO card. 'Premium plan.' He went to the nearest accredited hospital.

They told him the authorization system was down.
He called the HMO helpline.
Nobody picked up.

So what should you actually look for in a health plan? Here is your checklist — share this with your HR team:

01 — Does the HMO have a pharmaceutical partner?
If drugs aren't covered at the pharmacy, the consultation was pointless. Find out before you sign.

02 — Do the hospitals in your HMO's network actually trust them?
Call two hospitals in the network. Ask if the HMO pays on time. You will learn more in 5 minutes than in 5 sales presentations.

03 — Does telemedicine actually work — or just exist on paper?
For field teams, remote workers, or anyone outside Lagos — telemedicine is not a bonus. It is the whole system. Test it before you commit.

04 — How old is the HMO?
A 3-year-old HMO has not yet proven it pays through an economic crisis. A 35-year-old one has survived multiple. That history is not nostalgia — it is risk assessment.

05 — When something goes wrong at 10pm on a Friday — who exactly picks up?
Ask for the direct number of the person assigned to your account. If they hesitate, that is your answer.
