News Flash:MD KNARDA urged KNSG to Develop Agric Policy.
The newly appointed Managing Director of Kano Agricultural and Rural Development Authority (KNARDA) Dr. Farouk Kurawa, who double as the Principal Private Secretary (PPS) to the Executive Governor of Kano State, Engnr Abba Kabir Yusuf made the statement yesterday 2nd of August, 2023.
Dr Farouk Kurawa, disclosed this when the management staff of APPEALS Project Kano State Coordinating Office paid him a visit in his office to intimate him on the Project's Implementation Status Report.
He said "Agric Policy is essential to track progress and determines direction of Agricultural sector in the state. The needs to take a bold step towards the development of a comprehensive Agric Policy becames necessary he said.
He disclosed that Kano state government do not have a comprehensive Agric-Policy at the moment, the federal government has a long time history of Agric Policy of which the States are expected to study develop and link their own, he said.
He then commended the efforts of APPEALS Project Kano state Coordinating Office for taking the sector to greater heights and assured the state government's support to ensure that success is maintained.
Kano State Agricultural and Rural Development Authority (KNARDA) is among the major stakeholders and collaborating institutes of APPEALS Project implementation in Kano, in the area of Extension services, technology demonstrations, farmer's business schools, farmer's field days among others.
On his part the State Project Coordinator, Dr Hassan Ibrahim, disclosed that the Project has so far achieved 161 business alliances, 20 outgrower schemes and 57 offtakers in the state along across the 3 priority Value chains(Rice, Tomato and Wheat) Agri-businesses clusters.
He said one hundred percent of the project's beneficiaries had recorded an increase in yield of an average of 128 percent for rice, 100 percent for tomato and 33 percent for Wheat respectively.
"Equally, the Project has contributed to the National Food Basket with 115,222Mt food grains (109,702Mt Rice, and 5,520Mt of Wheat) and 38,428Mt of Tomato from inception of the project to date, "Dr. Hassan said.
He said the project was able to achieve this feat by increasing farmers’ productivity through reducing production costs, quality of raw and processed outputs, increasing profit margins for farms, and improving the supply chain of priority value chain during the period.
Regarding sustainability and exit strategy plan according to him, the project had also been able to form an association of farmers tagged "Kano All APPEALS Farmers Association (KAAFA) and established a Microfinance Bank named Kano APPEALS Microfinance Bank (KAMF Bank) in Gezawa which currently has 4,971 number of accounts, and has facilitated market linkage and access to inputs support to all Agari-Business clusters with AFEX.
The SPC said the project had also improved farmers livelihood in post harvest loss reduction through supporting Small and Medium Enterprises with Combine Harvester Hire Service to ease accessibility to High Machineries for Agricultural Mechanisation and promote utilization of common user assets.
"Iam happy to say that we did not experience much challenges on the overall implementation of the project because Kano state farmers have high hand experience in agriculture due to frequent agricultural extension services that is in practice and the massive irrigation facilities that we have. Farmers welcome the intervention with good heart.
He said under the production and productivity enhancement component, the project had demonstrated no fewer than 70 screened Climate Smart and Nutrition Sensitive technologies and provided many machines, production inputs and infrastructure support in different locations of the State.
"Under this component of the project, had improve the livelihoods of 10,355 farmers and entrepreneurs have increased through ownership of additional Natural and Productive Assets.
He noted a total of 82,840 indirect farm families benefited from the various project interventions in addition to facilitating the creation of additional 39,005 direct and indirect Jobs.
"We were also able to construct a total of 13.3km access roads across the intervention sites to link farm lands with processing and market clusters. Roads constructed are 3.2 km at Balare Rice and wheat production cluster in Ajingi LGA, 0.85km at Gidan Tuku Rice production cluster in Wudil LGA and 0.47km at Kwanar Dawaki Rice Processing Cluster in Dawakin Kudu LGA
Also, we constructed 11 Aggregation centres at Chiromawa, Karfi, Zakirai, Jarman Baka, Darki, Karaye, Bichi, Sundu, Jemomi, Alkammawa and Balare.
The project had also constructed two Cottage processing centres at Nassarawa and Bagwai local government areas of the state.
