We've noticed that many members are selling API keys simply because they see them as another digital asset, similar to cryptocurrency. However, an API key is not a coin or token.
Unlike cryptocurrency, an API key grants access to services that may generate usage charges on the account it is linked to. If the key is used extensively, the **account owner—not the buyer—**may be responsible for any resulting charges or negative balance.
Some members have already reported negative balances after selling their API keys. That's why we're issuing this notice.
Before you decide to sell your API key, please understand the following:
- An API key is linked to your account.
- Any usage made with your API key may result in charges billed to your account.
- Selling an API key without understanding how it works can expose you to unexpected financial liability.
If you don't fully understand what an API key is or how billing works, it's best not to sell it until you do.
Our intention is not to discourage anyone from participating, but to ensure that every member makes an informed decision. Many sellers treat API keys the same way they trade digital assets, but the two are fundamentally different.
