On this day in 1991, Anambra State was created. But our legacy of enterprise predates the map.

For centuries, Anambra has been the engine room of Nigerian commerce — from the ancient kingdom of Nri, to the great markets of Onitsha, to the industrial clusters of Nnewi and Oba.

Today, we're celebrating Anambra@35: ASBA and the Growth of Enterprise

Since its establishment on 8th December 2014, the Anambra State Small Business Agency (ASBA) has played a significant role in advancing entrepreneurship and strengthening the State’s Small and Medium business sector.

Created to provide structured financial and non-financial support to Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises(MSMEs), ASBA’s vision is to build an enabling environment where entrepreneurs can access the resources, knowledge and opportunities required to start, grow and sustain successful businesses.

Over the years, the Agency has pursued this mandate through business financing, entrepreneurship development, capacity building, advisory services, market access and strategic partnerships. Through its various funding schemes, ASBA has provided financial support to entrepreneurs, cooperatives, artisans and small businesses, enabling them to expand their operations, acquire equipment, increase production and create employment opportunities.

Beyond finance, ASBA has focused on equipping Ndi Anambra with the skills and knowledge needed to thrive in an increasingly competitive business environment, through entrepreneurship training, mentorship, business development support and collaborations with development partners.

The Agency has helped business owners improve their management skills, understand their markets and build enterprises capable of surviving and growing. Its support for cooperatives has also strengthened collective enterprise and expanded access to economic opportunities at the grassroots.

Under the leadership of Mr Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Charles Soludo, ASBA has continued to align its interventions with the administration’s vision of moving Anambra from consumption to production. The Agency has strengthened MSME financing, while supporting enterprise-focused initiatives, including the Tailoring/Garment Industrial Cluster at Ogbunike/Nkwelle and other productive sector interventions designed to stimulate local manufacturing, create jobs and promote the Made in Anambra brand.

As Anambra marks 35 years of statehood, ASBA celebrates its own journey of empowering enterprise and opening doors of opportunity for Ndi Anambra. From providing access to finance and business knowledge to developing industrial clusters, supporting cooperatives and connecting entrepreneurs to markets and strategic partners, the Agency remains committed to its objective of building stronger businesses, creating sustainable livelihoods and contributing to a more productive and prosperous Anambra.

PERSEVERANCE: the currency of Nigerian entrepreneurship.

This message has been on my mind since I addressed budding entrepreneurs at the Catalyst Empowerment Initiative organized by the Student Union Government at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka.

My charge to them was simple: Don’t quit too quickly.

Research shows the average Nigerian startup survives 3 to 5 years. The first 24 months are the toughest — capital constraints, infrastructure gaps, and market validation will test you.

But your startup is your brainchild. You conceptualized it. You raised the resources. You started against all odds.
You didn’t come this far to stop now.

History proves that resilience pays.
Innoson started from a spare parts shop. Interswitch fought to build trust in online payments. Flutterwave navigated regulatory storms. Dangote nearly folded in his early trading days.
They adapted. They iterated. They persevered. And so can you.

At *ASBA - Anambra State Small Business Agency*, we are committed to helping MSMEs survive that critical window with access to credit, training, markets, and business protection.

To every entrepreneur in Anambra and across Nigeria:

Don’t quit before the miracle.

Your Year 3 struggle could be your Year 5 success story.

*THE UNIVERSITY OF MAIN MARKET: WHY THE IGBO APPRENTICESHIP SYSTEM REMAINS ANAMBRA’S GREATEST EXPORT*

On the streets of Onitsha, there’s a saying you will hear from traders, manufacturers, and market leaders:
"A graduate of UMM will out-perform a graduate of UNN in business."

UMM is not in JAMB. It has no Senate, and no formal admission process.
UMM is the University of Main Market. It represents the various markets and commercial hubs across Igboland where apprentices and traders learn and perfect their craft.

This statement is not a slight on the prestigious University of Nigeria, Nsukka. It is a restatement of the proven success of the ancient business incubation model that built Onitsha, Nnewi, Aba, and the entire Igbo commercial empire: The Igbo Apprenticeship System — "Igba Boyi / Igba Odibo."

A training model that has stood the test of time and produced some of the most successful Igbo entrepreneurs for over a century. No lesson plan. No scheme of study. No tuition fees. Only close, personal, and practical mentorship in business development, financial management, and character formation.

No student loans. No unemployment. Just skills, capital, and networks transferred directly.

This system has produced entrepreneurs and businesses that have endured the test of time. Graduates of this system include: Mr. Cosmas Maduka (Coscharis Group), Chief Augustine Ejikeme Ilodibe (Ekenedilichukwu), Chief Innocent Chukwuma (Innoson Vehicle Manufacturing), Chief Ifeanyi Ubah (Capital Oil), and Chief Cletus Ibeto (Ibeto Group), among many others.

A university teaches you economics. The Main Market teaches you the practicality of cashflow. An apprentice learns by doing: how to move 100 cartons in 24 hours, how to manage debtors, and how to survive a bad market week.

A university graduate leaves with a certificate and job applications. An Igbo apprentice leaves with goods, a shop, suppliers, customers, and a mentor. He starts at "level 10," not "level 1."

The system drills discipline, honesty, and trust. No one gives you goods on credit if your character is bad. "Ezi afa ka ego" — A good name is better than riches.

The _Igba Boyi_ system promotes wealth distribution. One successful Oga will settle 10, 20, or 50 boys. That is how one shop in Onitsha becomes 50 shops across Nigeria and West Africa in 15 years.

This is why Anambra is called "The Japan of Africa." Nnewi auto parts, Onitsha trade, Oba pharmaceuticals — all built on this model.

The world is changing. If we do not document and upgrade this system, we risk losing it.

At ASBA - Anambra Small Business Agency - ASBA, under His Excellency, Prof. Charles Chukwuma Soludo, we believe the future of work in Anambra must merge "UMM" with conventional educational systems.

Anambra’s competitive advantage is enterprise.
If we focus on, document, and scale the Igbo Apprenticeship Model, we will export not just goods, but a proven system for wealth creation to the rest of Africa.

The saying on Onitsha street is a challenge.
Let us answer it by making the Igbo Apprenticeship System the most structured, funded, and respected vocational model in Nigeria.

SMALL BUSINESSES, BIG ANAMBRA: Powering Our Prosperity — From Market to Manufacturing

Anambra State is built on enterprise. From Onitsha Main Market to the factories of Nnewi and the tech startups in Awka, Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises are the true engine of our economy.

MSMEs matter because they create jobs. About 80% of employment in Anambra comes from small businesses. They reduce poverty, spread wealth, and give our youths opportunities to earn with dignity.

Recognizing this, the Anambra State Government under His Excellency, Prof. Charles Chukwuma Soludo has prioritized MSME development as part of the "Making Anambra Africa’s Dubai-Taiwan" agenda.

We are committed to making Anambra the most MSME-friendly state in Nigeria by supporting startups and ensuring that MSMEs operate seamlessly across the state.

Anambra’s strength is enterprise. ASBA, under Governor Soludo, is delivering:
- Access to Credit
- Business Exposure
- Training and Capacity Building
- Market Upgrades and Expansion
- Security and Business Protection

Join us to build a wealthier, smarter, and more productive Anambra.

The future of Anambra will be written by our entrepreneurs. We urge business owners to formalize their businesses, keep proper records, and leverage ASBA support.

To Ndi Anambra: Buy Made-in-Anambra., support MSMEs.

Nonso Samson Emeka Esq.
Acting MD ASBA.
