THE PURPOSE OF WORSHIP

After a service appraisal session at a leadership meeting one day, someone said, "I enjoyed the worship session today. It was a great atmosphere." I appreciated his comment, but it made me ask myself: Are we supposed to enjoy worship, or is God? Is worship meant for us or for God?

Friend, the object of worship is God, not man (John 12:32). Any worship that shifts focus from God to man is idolatry in another form. This is why worship leaders must be broken people. They must project Jesus, not their singing skills (John 3:30). They should edify the church, not entertain it.

Everything we do in worship must honour God, including our dances. Much of the debate about dances in church today would not arise if we understood the purpose of worship. Any dance, song, or expression that does not point men to Jesus is carnality wrapped in pseudo spirituality (Romans 8:6, Galatians 5:24).

Worshippers must be dead people. They must be dead to the flesh or self-promotion and alive to God (Romans 12:1-2). They must sing to please God, not to impress people. They must live a life acceptable to God if they ever expect their worship or songs to be acceptable (Genesis 4:4, Hebrews 11:4).

Worship is not just what we do on Sunday morning. It is how we live every day (1 Peter 2:5). You cannot be far from God Monday to Saturday and think you will lead people to God on Sunday. You cannot import what you did at a worldly party on Saturday and call it worship.

A worshipper is someone who, by the Holy Spirit, takes people to where he has already been in God (Genesis 22:5, Hebrews 5:1). Good music is important, but it must be because God deserves it, not because we enjoy it. We can enjoy worship while God is starved. God daily seeks worshippers who will give Him what He truly enjoys (John 4:23).

STOP PLAYING GAMES

At a relationship conference, a minister asked, "Is it okay to date unbelievers for material benefits?" A church worker replied, "You can date them, just don't marry them." The guest speaker was dumbfounded. It shows how lightly many believers now treat a subject God takes very seriously.

Friend, don't enter a relationship with someone you don't intend to marry. In relationships, purpose must be defined, and boundaries must be set (Proverbs 29:18). Why have a boyfriend or girlfriend just for fun? Why start what you are not ready to finish in marriage (2 Samuel 13:4, 12-13)?

Many are trapped today because of misguided steps (Ecclesiastes 10:15). Much of the marital frustration we see comes from a lack of clarity and purpose. Just because everyone around you is dating doesn't mean you must rush into an undefined relationship (Daniel 1:8).

Why date an unbeliever? Are you looking for material gain or for the fulfilment of God's purpose (2 Corinthians 6:14-18)? If we still need to convince Christians not to date unbelievers, what kind of disciples are we raising? We have imported worldly standards into the church, and casualties are emerging (Romans 12:1-2).

Some subjects can only be safely discussed when discipleship is firmly laid. Teaching prosperity to those who are not true disciples breeds crooks (1 Timothy 6:10-12). Teaching marriage to those who have not been to the cross breeds perverts. We must first get people saved and discipled (Jude 1:17-23).

I have said it repeatedly, what most young people need now is not a marriage seminar but a Bible seminar (2 Timothy 3:15-16). They must first learn Christ and His demands before learning marriage. No kingdom subject can be rightly taught outside correct biblical foundation and true discipleship (Ephesians 4:20).

YOU ARE ALREADY A TARGET

We were discussing spiritual warfare that year on campus when a lady joked, "I don't disturb the devil, so he won't disturb me." She felt that avoiding him kept her safe. It sounded funny, but it revealed a common misconception many believers hold about the reality of spiritual warfare.

Friend, you must understand the mystery of spiritual warfare (Proverbs 21:16). Scripture says we have overcome, which means we are in a fight. The good news is we fight from victory, not for it. This victory rests on Christ's finished work and is enforced by our faith (1 John 4:4, 5:4).

Neither innocence nor ignorance will exempt you from warfare. In fact, ignorant people often become victims (2 Corinthians 2:11). The devil exploits what you don't know to perpetuate his agenda. You cannot afford to be ignorant or arrogant. You must be aware and alert (Ephesians 5:14-16).

Arrogance is not a kingdom posture in warfare. Arrogant people often become prey (James 4:6-7). They overrate themselves, ignore divine signals, and trust their own strength. But our safety is in leaning on God's grace, not on personal strategy or wisdom (Proverbs 3:5).

Scripture admonishes us to be strong in the Lord, not in ourselves (Ephesians 6:10). Our weapons are only mighty through God, not through skill or experience. We must draw strength from Him. This was David's secret; his dependence on God was the secret of his triumph (1 Samuel 17:45-47).

You cannot avoid the devil by ignoring him. So long as you are a child of God, you are in the conflict (Revelation 12:10-12). The moment you gave your life to Christ and chose purpose, you became his target (1 Thessalonians 2:18). Careless people seem free because they are already captured. You are not his toy.

STAY ACCOUNTABLE

At a mentoring meeting for singles, I was asked to share red flags in a relationship. One point I gave was on accountability. I said simply, "If he has no accountability voice in his life, you need to watch out." That principle is true not just for relationships, but for life and destiny generally.

Friend, true freedom is found in accountability. Accountability is the key to stability, safety, and lasting success in life and ministry. People without accountability fizzle out in no time. It is God's wisdom for preserving your life and destiny. The more gifted or skilful you are, the more accountable you need to be (Luke 2:49-51).

There are people whom God has wisely placed in accountability relationships, yet they reject it or fail to take advantage of it (Hebrews 13:17). On the other hand, there are people who were not privileged to have such divine placement, but they wisely sought accountability for themselves. What you do with it determines how far you go.

When you understand the weight of your destiny, you will not joke with accountability. Accountability means being answerable to a person, people, or a system. It is having someone who can call you to order, track your progress, and provide balance as you pursue God's purpose. It keeps you grounded and focused (2 Timothy 1:1-7).

Anointing without accountability is a disaster waiting to happen. As anointed as Apostle Paul was, he remained accountable to the Church (Acts 12:25, 13:1-3). Today, everyone wants to be free. Teenagers want freedom from parents, wives from husbands, and young people from the local church. But the casualties of this false freedom are rising daily.

You are not truly free until you are righteously bound somewhere. What many call freedom is actually bo***ge, and what they call bo***ge is true freedom. If you are free to do whatever you like without accountability, you are bound by ignorance (Proverbs 1:23-26, Hosea 4:6). When you are accountable, you experience true freedom from avoidable mistakes and a life of regret.

GOD WEIGHS SACRIFICES

A young lady emptied her account as offering one Sunday. Her friend thought she was foolish. She said, "I didn't give God my tithe, I gave Him all I had." That same month, God opened doors she never imagined. Heaven records sacrifice, not figures.

Friend, God weighs sacrifices. If you would go far with God, you must embrace sacrifice. Sacrifice is a ladder for divine visitation (1 Kings 3:3-5). By one sacrifice, Noah altered the course of his life and the earth (Genesis 8:20-22). Your own season can also shift through sacrifice (2 Kings 3:26-27).

True sacrifice is more than money; it is a spiritual experience. Through sacrifice, Abraham unlocked wealth for himself and for his lineage (Genesis 22:15-18). You cannot walk with God conveniently forever; there comes a time you must move from convenience to sacrifice (2 Samuel 24:24).

A genuine sacrifice must cost you. It must touch you personally and demand something from you. God proved His love for us by sacrifice (John 3:16). Jesus kept giving until He gave Himself as a seed (John 12:24). Like someone said, "Any gospel that has not touched your pocket has not truly touched your heart" (Matthew 6:21).

Pharaoh wanted the Israelites to go and worship but leave their cattle behind, yet they insisted on going with all (Exodus 10:24-26). That is how the enemy wants you to serve God with words but not with your resources. But you must declare that all you are and all you have belongs to God (1 Corinthians 4:7, 6:19-20).

God is not asking for equal giving but for equal sacrifice. We have not been blessed equally, so we cannot give equally, but we can all sacrifice equally. Before God, a man who gives his all of N20,000 has given more than one who gives N50,000 out of N500,000. God is not mocked; He sees beyond the amount to the sacrifice behind it (Luke 21:1-4).
