RECAP// A Night of Celebration, Inspiration & Impact

What an unforgettable evening celebrating the people, ideas and actions shaping a more sustainable Namibia. The 5th Sustainable Development Awards, held under the theme “Empowering Namibian Youth for a Sustainable Future,” was more than an awards ceremony, it was a celebration of leadership, innovation, commitment and hope for the future.

We extend our sincere gratitude to our Guest of Honour, Her Excellency the Vice President of the Republic of Namibia, Lucia Witbooi, for gracing this special occasion and for lending her voice and support to the call for a more sustainable and inclusive future.

Although Dr Tarr could not be with us to receive the honour personally, the award was graciously received on his behalf by the Environmental Commissioner. We celebrate Dr Tarr’s enduring contribution and the legacy of knowledge, advocacy and action he represents.

And to every guest, partner, stakeholder, member of the media, service provider and member of the EIF team who helped make the evening such a memorable one, thank you. Your presence, support and contribution made the celebration truly special.

EIF and Eswatini Environmental Fund Strengthen Climate Finance Cooperation

The Chief Executive Officer of the Environmental Investment Fund of Namibia (EIF), Benedict Libanda, has concluded his courtesy visit to the Kingdom of Eswatini, during which he signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on behalf of EIF with the Eswatini Environmental Fund. The agreement marks an important step in strengthening cooperation between the two institutions, with the Government of Eswatini keen to study and adapt elements of Namibia’s climate finance model to strengthen its own institutional and financing mechanisms.

During the visit, Mr. Libanda and the EIF delegation paid courtesy visits to His Excellency the Right Honourable Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Eswatini, Russell Mmiso Dlamini, (Parliament of Eswatini) the Honourable Minister of Tourism and Environmental Affairs, Jane M. Mkhonta Simelane and the Honourable Minister of Finance, Neal Rijkenberg. (Parliament of Eswatini)

The relationship between EIF and the Eswatini Environmental Fund dates back to 2022, when the two institutions began sharing experiences and lessons on climate finance, institutional development and access to international climate funds. EIF is supporting the development of Eswatini’s capacity towards accreditation to the Green Climate Fund (GCF).

Speaking during the MOU signing, Mr. Libanda noted that the partnership has now reached an important new phase. He emphasised that the two institutions intend to move beyond an institutional capacity-building and knowledge-sharing relationship towards co-designing and implementing tangible investment projects on the ground.

Potential areas of collaboration include sustainable agriculture and food systems, renewable energy, climate-resilient livelihoods, resilient infrastructure and other green investment opportunities that can contribute to economic development while strengthening climate resilience in both countries.

“We want to move from sharing experiences and lessons to jointly designing and implementing projects that deliver tangible benefits to communities. The real measure of this partnership will be the investments we are able to mobilise and the impact they create on the ground.”

Mr. Libanda further highlighted EIF’s experience in supporting climate finance institutions beyond Namibia. Over the years, EIF has supported entities in countries including Malawi, Liberia, Zambia, Botswana, Lao PDR and Afghanistan in their efforts to strengthen institutional capacity and pursue accreditation to the Green Climate Fund.

The MOU therefore provides a platform for Namibia and Eswatini to deepen South-South cooperation, leverage their respective experiences and jointly mobilise climate finance for green growth, climate resilience and sustainable development.

The partnership is expected to evolve into a pipeline of jointly developed programmes and projects, positioning the two institutions to complement each other in accessing international climate and development finance and translating it into investments that benefit communities and economies in both countries.

CALL FOR GRANT PROPOSALS NOW OPEN | EIF SMALL GRANTS FACILITY 2026/27

The Environmental Investment Fund invites Individuals, Community-Based Organisations (CBOs), Women’s Groups, Youth Groups, MSMEs and Non-Profit Organisations (NPOs) to submit grant proposals under the EIF Small Grants Facility.

Funding is available for innovative projects that contribute to:
🌱Climate Change
🌱Biodiversity Conservation
🌱Land Restoration
🌱Green Enterprise Development

Funding available: N$50,000 – N$150,000

If your project promotes sustainable development and environmental protection, we encourage you to apply.

IREMA Final Evaluation Workshop

Last week, the Environmental Investment Fund of Namibia (EIF) successfully hosted the Final Independent Evaluation Validation Workshop for the IREMA Project at the Hilton Hotel in Windhoek. The workshop brought together representatives from government institutions, development partners, project stakeholders and evaluators to review and validate the findings of the project's independent evaluation.

During the workshop, the evaluation team presented the methodology and approach used in conducting the assessment, followed by detailed presentations of the key findings and recommendations. Participants actively engaged in discussions to validate the evaluation results, share experiences, and provide valuable insights to ensure that the final report accurately reflects the project's achievements, lessons learned, challenges encountered and opportunities for future programming.

The validation process is an important step in promoting accountability, transparency, and learning. It enables stakeholders to collectively reflect on the project's impact and identify strategic actions that can strengthen future climate adaptation and sustainable land management initiatives in Namibia. The recommendations generated through this process will provide valuable guidance for enhancing the effectiveness and sustainability of similar interventions aimed at building resilient communities and ecosystems.

EIF extends its sincere appreciation to all stakeholders who participated in the workshop and contributed to the constructive discussions. Their commitment and expertise continue to play a vital role in advancing Namibia's climate resilience agenda and ensuring the sustainable management of the country's natural resources for current and future generations.

Environmental Investment Fund in partnership with AGRA (Agriculture Namibia) has handed over livestock feed to the Zambezi Regional Council to support livestock farmers in Kabbe North and Kabbe South Constituencies, whose livelihoods were severely impacted by the recent floods.

The donation aims to alleviate the shortage of grazing and feed while helping farmers protect their livestock and recover from the effects of this climate-related disaster.

Together, we are investing in resilient communities, safeguarding livelihoods, and ensuring that no farmer is left behind.
