Heroes' Day reminds us that what we build today can carry meaning far beyond ourselves.

A stronger family.
A more secure future.
More opportunities for the next generation.

Thoughtful financial planning is one of the most powerful ways to build a legacy that protects the people you love and gives them the freedom to go even further.

According to Stats SA, women outlive men by an average of five to six years. That's five to six more years of expenses, healthcare costs, and life to fund.

The same savings that might be sufficient for a man often aren't for a woman. Same contributions, same investment returns, but a longer drawdown period changes the outcome significantly.

Longevity is a financial risk. But it's one you can plan for.

Many women leave financial decisions to their spouses, not out of disinterest, but because life is already full. Career, kids, household. There simply isn't time.

But life doesn't always go to plan. Divorce, the death of a spouse, or a critical illness. When these things happen, financial dependency becomes financial vulnerability.

Get involved. Ask the right questions. And if you're not sure where to start, speak to a PSG Wealth advisor: https://advisers.psg.co.za/branch-office/windhoek

Saving the same amount as men is often not enough.

Women typically outlive men, which means retirement funds need to stretch further, healthcare costs accumulate longer, and financial independence has to be planned more deliberately.

Same savings rate. Different outcome. That gap doesn't close by accident.

What do you notice about the curve of this graph?

From age 20 to 30, the monthly contribution needed to reach R10 million at retirement barely moves. That's compounding doing its quiet work.

From age 35 onwards, the line starts to climb, and by 45, you're contributing nearly R9,000 a month to reach the same target that would have cost you under R500 at age 20.

Compounding is silent in the early years and obvious in the later ones.

Give your money time to work.

When you're starting out, a small monthly contribution can seem pointless, so it's easy to push it to later, when you're earning more.

But those early contributions don't just build capital. They build the habit of saving before lifestyle has a chance to fill the gap.

Discipline compounds alongside money. The people who retire well aren't always the ones who earned the most. They're usually the ones who started early and didn't stop.

Wealth starts as a habit. Build that first, and the rest follows.
