New Rule for Namibians Driving to SA: Vehicle Declaration Required from June 2026
Heads up, Namibian motorists !
If you drive into South Africa, there's a new border rule coming your way.
What's changing ?
From 1 June 2026, all foreign-registered vehicles...including Namibian cars...must complete a temporary import declaration when entering South Africa.
Why now ?
South Africa's tax authority (SARS) is rolling out new digital systems (like the Travel Management System and a Mobi App) that let you declare your vehicle online before you arrive...no more manual paperwork at the gate.
Key facts to know:
β
This applies even though Namibia is a SACU member (same customs union as SA, Botswana, Lesotho, and Eswatini).
β
The rule is based on South Africa's Customs and Excise Act, Section 15.
β
Busy border posts affected: Ariamsvlei, Noordoewer, Nakop, Vioolsdrift.
β
You can register and declare in advance via SARS's traveller portal.
β
Officials will be at borders to help during the transition.
What should you do ?
π Register on the SARS TMS platform (link below) before June 2026.
π Keep an eye on updates from SARS and Namibian authorities.
π Need help ? Contact SARS regional officials (see comments for details).
Share this with anyone who crosses the border regularly...better to know early than get stuck at the gate !
