Top of the morning BMIB Followers, yet another interesting article from NEWS24..... I wonder how many vehicles in Namibia do not have insurance ?????

Johannesburg - Alexander Forbes Insurance (AFI) is demanding compulsory third-party damage insurance for ALL vehicles using South African roads... and it could cost R50 a month.

Currently, according to the AA, a whopping 65% of vehicles sharing the tar with you have NO INSURANCE AT ALL! If a wreck of a taxi hits your family car, the chances of the damage being paid for are pretty much ZERO - and that means you, the insured car-owner, will have to cough up for repairs for something that is no fault of your own.

AFI managing director, Gari D***o, says a reduction in motor insurance premiums is possible as more vehicles will be covered with a bigger pool of contributors. As a result, vehicle insurance will become more affordable in South Africa.

LESS THAN 35% OF SA VEHICLES INSURED

D***o says this will also result in an increase in the number of roadworthy vehicles on South Africa’s roads as more funds become available for Third Party vehicle damage repairs.

Motor industry experts also say that South Africa is one of the few countries in the Southern African Development Community that does not enforce compulsory comprehensive insurance on motor vehicle owners.

Gary Ronald, head of public affairs at the AA, “The hindrance for compulsory third party in South Africa is affordability with regards to insurance plans as we would first need to accumulate a fund to pay out third party claims, a fund which at this stage does not exist.

“There then begs the question of where this fund would originate, from the government or from commercial industry bodies.”

“If all drivers were to pay a compulsory fee of say R50 per month, of the 960 000 crashes we have per year, the fund would be bankrupt before we began, hence the need for seed capital to the fund to make third party payouts viable.”

FUND NEEDED TO PAY CLAIMS

Although the government has discussed introducing mandatory third party insurance, there is still much debate around the best way to collect payments.

Options being considered are the introduction of a fuel price levy, annual premiums when renewing ones vehicle licence, and/or an arrangement when you purchase your vehicle.

Countries such as the United Kingdom, United Arab Emirates and Italy have successfully implemented third party insurance.

D***o said: “Knowing that South African roads are safer will provide road users with greater peace of mind and ensure that the insurance industry as a whole remains sustainable.”

Wheels24's LES STEPHENSON WRITES "SA used to have compulsory third-party insurance but it was discontinued and some sources believe as many as half of the vehicles on SA's roads are totally uninsured. So if a skidonk clobbers your new BMW, it's your problem..."

Ahhh yes, the dreaded let's cancel our insurance to save on household expenses? here is yet another article to read from NEWS24

Don't compromise your insurance policies in an attempt to reduce your living costs...

n South Africa, you can't buy a car until you can prove that the vehicle is insured. But, it is not unheard of for vehicle owners to cancel the policy later. Karl Bauermeister Director of Origination and Sales at Vehicle and Asset Finance at Standard Bank, says this is extremely risky.

"One is contractually bound to insure a vehicle or any asset that is financed by a financial institution. Cancelling one's insurance is a breach of the contract between the buyer and the organisation that has financed the purchase. Should something happen to the vehicle they could end up driving a vehicle that is damaged, which will decrease its trade-in value. In the worst case scenario they could find themselves in serious financial trouble should the car be stolen or written off, as they are still liable for repayment of the financing. In addition, they still need to replace their vehicle."

The reality though is that consumers are looking to reduce expenses, and are asking, 'Is affordable insurance no longer an option?'

"Growth in the insurance market has meant consumers have more options when selecting short-term insurance products."

When shopping around for insurance, Bauermeister advises:

Shop around for the most cost effective solution but make sure that the cover you are offered matches your needs.
If your circumstances have changed since first insuring your asset, call your insurance company and get a revised quotation.
When evaluating comparative quotes ensure that you compare "like with like". For example, one insurance quote might be cheaper in terms of monthly repayments but may include a higher excess amount.
Weigh up the benefits of going direct as opposed to through a broker and vice-a-versa. Direct may be cheaper but a broker can ensure you get the best comparative quotes and having a "middleman" can be advantageous if you need to claim.
You could opt to pay a voluntary or higher excess as many insurance companies offer a discount for this.
Discuss all possible scenarios with the insurance company, for instance, you could get a discount for additional security systems.
He says there are also ways to keep your existing insurance premiums down. "These include doing your best to maintain a claim free record which can result in significant savings. In addition if over 55, you qualify for substantial savings on your premiums."

Bauermeister also warns against being tempted to supply false information to keep premiums down. "Don't claim you are the primary driver if in fact your son or daughter is driving the vehicle. In the event of a claim, the insurance company will not pay if you have supplied incorrect or false information. Also don't claim to keep the car in an area where premiums are lower than for instance in a larger city which is considered greater risk and therefore subject to higher premiums. Providing incorrect information is a criminal offense and could render your insurance policy invalid."

"For hassle free driving, make sure you have insurance, and the right insurance. If you do run into financial difficulties, contact your insurance company or broker as soon as possible," Bauermeister concludes.

Understanding insurance

Insuring yourself and your possessions should be an essential part of your financial planning.

But how should you go about it? Here are some options:

Insurance via a broker
Obtaining your insurance through an insurance broker has traditionally been the way to obtain cover for your possessions, and many people prefer to do business this way.

"There is definitely room for both brokers and dealing directly with an insurance company," maintains independent financial services consultant Yusuf Wajah. "It is a matter of choice. A broker gives you the opportunity to discuss things face to face rather than with a voice on the telephone. When you consult a broker, they should first do a needs analysis with you."

This analyses your lifestyle, income and possessions to determine the most appropriate insurance for you. It will also include your risk profile, for instance your age, the area you live in, your existing security system, and so on. The lower the risk you represent, the lower your premiums will be.

"A broker will be able to explain all the conditions attached to your insurance policy, such as exclusions and the excess you’ll be liable for if you claim. If you have queries it’s reassuring to have the continuity of a personal relationship, whereas if you are dealing with a call centre you might not get to speak to the same person who took your initial call."

The benefits of using a broker often only become apparent in a crisis, for instance in the event of a complicated claim, they could negotiate with the insurance company on your behalf. "An independent broker will have access to all the insurance companies, to recommend the best one for you."

DIY Insurance
Over the last few years, there has been a move towards dealing with insurance companies directly. Many companies now offer a service where you can arrange insurance by telephone or on the Internet.

"The value is that it is quick and easy to do, and that it eliminates the cost of a middle man or broker," explains Anthea Abrahams, director of Dial Direct Insurance.

The consultants in the call centre should explain every aspect of the policy to you. You are taken through the process step by step. This includes doing a needs analysis and drawing up a risk profile. Claims are also handled over the telephone, which is convenient and may save time for the consumer.

The ultimate responsibility for knowing about your insurance remains yours, however. As soon as you receive your policy, you need to read the policy book and schedule of insurance.

It is essential that you understand what you have insured, what is excluded, and what your excess will be in the event of a claim. You also need to check that your personal information and contact details are correct and up to date at all times.

Insurance for women
Because statistics show that men and women pose a very different risk when it comes to vehicle insurance, some companies now take this into account.

"We introduced lower car insurance premiums for women drivers when research proved conclusively that women have fewer accidents than men," says Robyn Farrell, director of 1st for Women Insurance Brokers. "This translates into a considerable saving."

There is no difference in the risk profile between women and men for other insurance such as home contents, but if you use the same company for all your insurance requirements, the lower car premium will impact positively on your overall premium.

Many companies now also offer added value in the form of 'assist' programmes, such as roadside, medical and trauma assistance and a free towing service. Others offer plumbing and electrical assistance. It is in your interest to find out about these extras when investigating different insurance options.

It is also essential that you alert your insurance company to any dissatisfactory service you may have received. The feedback is necessary to ensure improved service in the industry as a whole. Insurance is not only about the premiums, the service levels are also important.

Take responsibility

When shopping around for insurance, make sure you understand the products. For instance, getting cash back for not claiming might sound good, but the premium payable could be higher or your excess could be high.
Fill in the inventory of home contents honestly and accurately, and update it every year.
Remember that if you are under-insured, you will receive a claim payout proportionate to the amount by which you are under-insured.
Keep your payments up to date (preferably using a debit order) otherwise you will not be covered.
