GEORGE TOWN (May 29): Oriental Holdings Bhdโ€™s unit Melaka Straits Medical Centre Sdn Bhd (MSMC) has formalised a joint venture (JV) with Ideal Hasrat Bumiraya Sdn Bhd, part of Ideal Property Group, to develop a tertiary medical centre, named Ideal Oriental Medical Centre.

In a statement on Friday, MSMC said the collaboration, formalised on Thursday, signalled a bold step towards redefining healthcare delivery in northern Peninsular Malaysia through a future-ready medical ecosystem that integrates advanced tertiary care, innovative technology, and seamless urban connectivity.

It said the proposed medical centre, planned on a 0.7689-hectare site within the Queens Waterfront master plan, is expected to be completed by the end of 2030.

The medical centre aims to cater to the healthcare needs of residents in Gelugor, Bayan Baru, Bayan Lepas and surrounding communities, alongside Penangโ€™s growing population of professionals, engineers, and industrial workforce concentrated within the Bayan Lepas manufacturing corridor.

โ€œThe development is also strategically positioned to support Penangโ€™s thriving medical tourism sector, particularly international patients seeking advanced healthcare services in the region,โ€ it said.

The proposed development is expected to reinforce Penangโ€™s position as one of Malaysiaโ€™s leading healthcare hubs while supporting the stateโ€™s long-term aspirations in healthcare excellence, medical tourism, and sustainable urban growth, it added.

The Penang Hill Cable Car project is expected to be completed by June next year, followed by two to three months of safety testing before operations officially begin, according to Penang Hill Corporation general manager Datuk Cheok Lay Leng.

According to a report by Kwong Wah Yit Poh, Cheok said the new aerial cable car system is expected to help reduce congestion at the existing Penang Hill funicular railway station, particularly during peak holiday periods.

โ€œThe cable car will not only help disperse crowds from the funicular station, but also provide visitors with a completely different experience,โ€ he said.

The 2.73-kilometre cable car system, which began construction in October 2024 near the Penang Botanic Gardens, is a public-private partnership between Penang Hill Corporation, Hartasuma Sdn Bhd and Austrian ropeway specialist Doppelmayr Seilbahnen GmbH.

The system will feature 50 eight-seater gondolas capable of transporting passengers from the Botanic Gardens to the hilltop in under 10 minutes.

The project includes three stations, namely Garden Station, Turn Station and Hilltop Station along with a commercial plaza, 700 parking bays and dedicated bus parking facilities.

All major infrastructure is designed to meet Green Building Index (GBI) Gold certification standards.

Cheok noted that while the new cable car may initially affect ridership on the century-old funicular railway, both attractions offer distinct experiences. The existing railway, he said, remains an iconic attraction due to its heritage value.

Meanwhile, the Penang Hill funicular railway is also expected to undergo a major track replacement exercise next year, involving significant costs and technical complexity due to the railwayโ€™s steep hillside alignment.

To maintain service quality, Cheok said gradual fare adjustments may be introduced over the coming years, although increases would be implemented carefully and progressively.

Currently, Malaysian citizens pay RM16 for adult tickets and RM8 for children and senior citizens, while foreign visitors pay RM30 for adults and RM15 for children.

With the upcoming school holidays and long weekends, Penang Hill is expecting daily visitor numbers to reach around 8,000, with more than 20,000 visitors projected over a three-day holiday period.

Visitors are encouraged to avoid peak hours by arriving before 9am or after 4pm to reduce waiting times.

Tanjong Bungah beachfront land snapped up by Magni-Tech for RM133 million

Magni-Tech Industries Bhd, best known for its garment manufacturing and packaging products, is making a bold pivot into property development with the acquisition of a prime 4.7-acre beachfront parcel in Tanjong Bungah, Penang, for RM133.33 million cash.

The 4.7-acre freehold site priced at approximately RM649 per square foot, sits adjacent to the Dalat International School and was previously used as a car park. According to a Bursa Malaysia filing, the purchase will be funded entirely through internally generated funds, with Magni-Techโ€™s wholly-owned subsidiary, Magni Land Sdn Bhd, signing a sale and purchase agreement with Neoh Choo Ee & Company Sdn Bhd which is an investment holding company controlled by the Neoh family.

The land transaction marks a striking jump in value. Originally acquired by the vendor in 1973, the site carried an audited net book value of just RM1.01 million as at December 31, 2025 โ€” a testament to how dramatically Penangโ€™s prime coastal property values have appreciated over the decades.

Magni-Tech described the location as highly attractive, surrounded by established hotels, resorts, and international schools, factors the company believes enhance both its appeal and development potential.

At the helm of Magni-Tech is 79-year-old Penang tycoon Tan Sri Tan Kok Ping, who serves as executive chairman and substantial shareholder, holding a direct 5.25% stake and an indirect 13.95% interest in the company.

The acquisition is expected to be completed in the second half of 2026, signalling a significant new chapter for the manufacturer-turned-developer.

Create a glamorous cinematic portrait of a woman standing on a luxurious Mediterranean-style terrace during sunset. She has long flowing jet-black wavy hair blowing dramatically in the wind, bronzed glowing skin, bold eye makeup, sculpted brows, glossy n**e-pink lips, and large hoop earrings. She wears an elegant sheer white high-slit gown with a flowing chiffon train that moves gracefully behind her, paired with strappy n**e lace-up stiletto heels.

The background features a breathtaking coastal cliffside with soft golden sunset lighting, dreamy clouds, ocean views, and romantic Italian-inspired architecture surrounded by vibrant pink flowers and stone balustrades. The overall mood is luxurious, feminine, powerful, and cinematic โ€” blending high-fashion editorial glamour with romantic Mediterranean vacation aesthetics.

The image has warm golden-hour tones, soft depth of field, and a dramatic wind-swept effect that creates a sensual, goddess-like atmosphere. The signature โ€œBella Mโ€ appears in elegant gold script in the bottom corner.

As part of the ongoing construction of the Penang LRT Mutiara Line, Mass Rapid Transit Corporation (MRT Corp) has announced a long-term โ€œFree-Flowโ€ traffic management plan at the junction of Jalan Tengah and Jalan Sultan Azlan Shah.

In a statement issued earlier, MRT Corp said the traffic diversion will take effect from May 16, 2026, until Dec 31, 2028, involving a total duration of approximately 960 days. The temporary traffic arrangement is necessary to facilitate piling, pile cap, and structural works for the LRT project.

Under the new traffic plan, motorists travelling from Jalan Tengah towards the Penang International Airport will be required to use the left lane and make a U-turn before the Jalan Mahsuri junction to enter Jalan Sultan Azlan Shah. Those heading towards Komtar may still turn left as usual.

For traffic coming from the Komtar direction towards Jalan Tengah, drivers must use a newly constructed U-turn located in front of the Renesas factory. MRT Corp noted that this U-turn is strictly for light vehicles only.

Meanwhile, motorists from Jalan Tengah heading towards Jalan Kampung Jawa will no longer be allowed to make a direct right turn at the junction. Drivers may instead turn left into Jalan Mayang Pasir before entering Jalan Mahsuri, or continue straight towards the Bukit Jambul roundabout to perform a U-turn.

For those travelling from the airport towards Jalan Kampung Jawa, motorists are advised to turn left at the Sunway Prima junction near the TNB PPU before proceeding to Jalan Mahsuri and making a right turn at the traffic lights.

MRT Corp advised road users to remain cautious and follow all traffic signage and instructions throughout the construction period. Traffic marshals, safety barriers, and traffic cones will also be deployed to help manage traffic flow and ensure public safety.

GEORGE TOWN: Penang is open to hosting international-level music festivals if the budget, location and sponsors permit, says state Tourism and Creative Economy committee chairman Wong Hon Wai.

Wong said the state government viewed music festivals as a tourism product that could attract domestic and international visitors.

โ€œWe have experience organising music festival-style events.

โ€œIn 2024, when we moved the Penang Bridge International Marathon to Batu Kawan, we held a music festival before the run took place.

โ€œThe festival was held before the marathon and was mostly attended by the participants,โ€ he said during the state assembly sitting in Lebuh Light on Tuesday (May 12).

Wong was responding to an additional question by Joseph Ng (PH-Air Itam) on whether Penang was ready to host festivals like the recent Rain Rave 2026 Water Music Festival event in Bukit Bintang, Kuala Lumpur.

Wong said many might not be aware a rave-style music festival had been held in conjunction with the marathon in 2024.

โ€œIt was held at night before the run so the runners could enjoy the music festival experience before the running event,โ€ he said.

Wong said the state government would consider organising more festivals in the future based on the suitability of the location, financial capacity and the organisersโ€™ commitment.

Earlier, responding to Ngโ€™s written question on new tourism products and attractions and tourism promotion initiatives introduced by the state government and private sector in conjunction with Visit Malaysia Year 2026, Wong said the state government, through Penang Global Tourism, had formulated various strategic initiatives to strengthen the stateโ€™s tourism sector.

Wong said there were 14 different attractions, including museums, sights and locations, to attract tourists.

โ€œWe not only want to introduce new products, but we want to give our existing ones more dimension as well.

โ€œTaking Penang Hill as an example, people can not only take the funicular train but also opt to hike up.

โ€œThey can camp overnight and there is even a night walk.

โ€œMany dimensions can be added to existing experiences,โ€ he said.

Wong said tourists could also experience Penang by sea, including taking a boat ride to see both bridges up close.

โ€œIt may be the same sea and the same hill, but there are different ways of seeing it, which will encourage people to return multiple times,โ€ he said.
