1969 Election & the Fallout
In the 1969 general election, the Alliance suffered major losses β especially MCA: out of 33 parliamentary seats it contested, it retained only 13.
The losses by MCA were interpreted as a clear sign that Chinese voters were shifting toward other, mostly non-Malay parties.
*The defeat triggered deep anxieties among many Malays β fears that the Malay political dominance and Malay privileges would be eroded.*
On 12 May 1969 (shortly after the election), MCA announced it would withdraw from the government (federal and state levels) because it felt it no longer represented the Chinese communityβs will.
That move (or threat) contributed to tension and instability; within days, communal riots erupted (the tragic 13 May Incident). π€
