Rural Digitalization - Part 2/2

The Wall Street Journal has also highlighted the wave of agricultural investment boom. The Wall Street Journal stated that due to the low price of wireless networking technology, tools for collecting data and monitoring crops are getting more and more sophisticated, added with entrepreneurs looking for new market demand as well as consumers’ attention on food safety, making the food supply chain be more transparent. The report also identified five key investment areas, namely “Precise Agriculture”, indoor farms, food safety, farm robots and alternative food solution.

The development of agricultural science and technology is largely related to the aging of rural population. Because in the case of reduced labour, it is imperative to use technology to improve farming efficiency. In April 2016, the G7 Agriculture Ministers Meeting was held in Niigata, Japan. According to the data released during the meeting, among the other six major industrial countries besides Canada, the agricultural population over 55 years old has risen from 33% in 2002 to 42% in 2012, indicating relatively higher rate of aging. Therefore, several countries have called for a higher ratio of young people and women devoting to agricultural industry in order to cope with the rising global population and increasing food demand. In addition, besides allowing the older generations of farmers be easier in managing farming, young farmers shall be encourage to participate actively in agriculture industry.

With the arrival of big data era, agricultural technology added with the development of data processing, we strongly believe that technology has helped to connect peasant farmers with the market and transform the way of peasant villages doing business. Therefore, it is very likely to realize the vision of improving the livelihood of the farmers from the fundamental aspect of social economy.

Today, digital is no longer part of the economy, but is the economy itself. According to a study conducted by the MIT Sloan School of Management, companies that can comply with the digital trend are 26% more profitable than other companies in the same industry. Therefore, a correct use of digital technology can help to transform the rural areas and establish a thoroughly new ecosystem for the rural areas to surpass the traditional direct supply chain and hence move towards the direction of agricultural Internet of Things.

那随着大数据时代的来临,农业科技搭上数据化的演算翅膀,我们深信以科技连结农民与市场,改变农村做生意的方式,进而从社会经济的根本面改善农民的生活的愿景是很有希望实现的。

现在,数位已经不是经济的一部分,数位它本身就是经济。根据麻省理工史隆管理学院的一项研究显示,能顺应数位潮流的企业,获利率比同产业的其它产业高出26%。故此,善用数位科技协助农村转型,可以为农村打造一个全新的生态系统,超越传统的直线式供应链,进一步朝农业物联网的方向迈进。

Rural Digitalization - Part 1/2

Whenever mentioning about agriculture, our mind straight away imagines farmers who are working hard with their sweats dropping as well as their very basic farmhouse. That is perhaps the stereotype of the common people towards agriculture, and it may also cause to the reluctance of the younger generation in many countries to devote themselves into the agricultural economy! Li Wei, a poet of the Tang Dynasty in his poem entitled "Sympathy for the Peasants" wrote “In the afternoon under the hot sun, sweats of the farmers dropped onto the earth. Is there anyone being aware that every single rice on the plate is full of extreme hard work.” describing the labour effort of the farmers. For thousands of years, the lyrics of that poem has been a well-known piece to nearly all primary school pupils to the families of the Chinese ethnics. The writing of that poem has unequivocally reflected the realistic picture of the farmers of Indonesia. Nevertheless, such phenomenon has been progressing with improvement in silence.

With various sophisticated agricultural technologies from overseas having been brought in and introduced by the National Federation of Rural Co-operative (Induk KUD) into Indonesia, the gap between agriculture and technology is getting smaller and smaller, people no longer hold on to previous impression towards farmers. The ultimate goal is to transform the farms towards full-automation over time without needing to rely on human labour. In the new century, farmers no longer carry out their farming merely with physical labour work, but more decision-making choices with brain are required, which such need requires a lot of human resources to implement trainings with long period of supervision, in order to achieve the impact. Only with allowing the peasants to liberate themselves from the tedious and hard physical labour work, we be able to create greater value for the outlook of agriculture industry.

The digital transformation among enterprises has reached its tipping point. The digital transformation of agriculture industry is indeed unavoidable.

Hence, should Li Wei, the poet during the Tang Dynasty travel to the present century through a time machine, he is likely to see a completely different situation: Under the hot sun, automatic machines operate steadily in traction at the agricultural land, one single instruction can be set for the actions of farming, watering, fertilization and harvesting. A drone is patrolling the crop above the farmland, and the captured image data is transmitted on the real time back the ground. Sensors are installed at the field to measure and record the environmental conditions at all times. Regardless of what problems occur in the crop, it can be traced instantly. At this moment, where is the farmer? He or she only needs to sit in the centralized control room at ease, and makes the most favourable judgement through various digitally processed data and video images, combined with previous farming experience. The value of the farmers, should not merely be reflected from their physical labour work.

The above description is no longer a fantasy without ground, but it is a goal that the world’s scientists who are concerned about agricultural technology are working together currently. That is because, with the help of technology, the farmers going forward, will not need to work as hard as they are doing now. According to a report released by a US agricultural investment platform - AgFunder in February this year, from 2010 to 2015, the amount of investment in agricultural science and technology has been rising. The amount of investment in 2015 was nearly double that of the previous year, recording at USD 4.6 billion. Among the top three most notable areas are agricultural e-commerce, water supply, as well as “Precise Agriculture” that comprises of drones and automated machinery.

提到农业,总是会让人联想到挥汗如雨的农夫,还有简陋的农舍。这也许就是一般人对农业的刻板印象,也是可能导致许许多多国家年轻一代不愿意投身农业经济的原因吧!唐代诗人李绅的《悯农》诗「锄禾日当午,汗滴禾下土。谁知盘中飧,粒粒皆辛苦。」讲述农人辛劳,传颂千年,几乎是全中华区域每一位小学生都会背诵的诗歌,而这也确实反映了印度尼西亚农民的现实写照。但是,这种现象其实在默默的改善中。

随着经由印尼全国乡村合作社联盟(Induk KUD)向海外引进的各种先进农业科技,而今农业与科技的距离越来越近,农夫的形象已经不若以往,终极目标就是让农场逐渐朝自动化、无人化的方向前进。新世代的农夫,不再只是用劳力耕作,还需花更多脑力决策,而这都需要投入大量的人力资源实行培训与长时间的督导,才能显现效果。也唯有让农夫从繁琐艰辛的体力劳动中解放出来,我们才能为未来的农业创造更大价值。

数位转型在企业间已经达到引爆点,属于农业的数位转型也是势在必行。

所以,如果李绅穿越时空来到现在,他很有可能会看到完全不同的光景:炙热太阳下,自动曳引机在农地裡稳定运作,耕田、灌溉、施肥、收成,一个指令就能搞定。无人机正在农地上方巡视作物,拍摄下来的影像数据通通即时回传。田埂上安装了感测器,随时测量和记录环境状况,不论农作物出了任何问题,都可以立刻追踪处理。这个时候,农夫在哪裡?他或她只需要安心坐在中央控制室裡,透过各种经过数位处理的数据和影像画面,结合过往的耕作经验做出最有利作物的判断就行了。农人的价值,不应该只在于体力劳动。

以上描述并不是毫无依据的幻想,而是全球关心农业科技者正在共同努力的目标。因为,多了科技的辅助,未来的农民,不该再像现在一样辛苦。根据美国农业投资平台AgFunder今年2月发表的报告,从2010年到2015年,农业科技领域投资金额一路攀升。2015年的投资金额甚至比前一年高出将近一倍,来到46亿美元。其中前三项最受瞩目的领域就是农业电商、灌溉给水以及包含无人机和自动化机械的“精准农业”。

Bandung, the capital of West Java, is the third city with most compact population in Indonesia. Bandung is
most beautiful place in this peculiar country. It has unique legends that are beyond the imagination of even
the most whimsical travellers. Bandung is filled with also extremely uncommon bizarre sceneries. Bandung,
known as the Paris of Java, is no wonder being complimented with the reputation of “the most beautiful city in Indonesia”.

According to the data released in the CBRE Study in September 2017, Bandung is one of the top 10
destinations for Indonesia future investment. Bandung is located approximately 140 kilometers in the
southeast of Jakarta. The recent infrastructure projects (including high-speed railways connecting the city with
Jakarta) will create many new investment opportunities in the medium term.

Indonesia’s President Zokovy participated in the Bandung Creative City Forum (BCCF) when he visited Bandung
on the 10 th November 2018. Zokovic has given highest compliment to the innovative ability of Bandung:
“Banglong has the potential to become a hub of innovation and development in Indonesia. This is a city that is
very open and filled with innovative spirit.” In his opinion, Bandung has fulfilled the conditions to participate in
the 4 th industrial revolution (Industry 4.0).

Zokovic believes that achieving economic development is inseparable from economic innovation and a sound

Small-scale Biomass Power Stations in Rural Areas: the Promoter of Smart Agriculture. - Part 2/2

Along the poverty alleviation work that the National Federation of Rural Co-operative (Induk KUD) has been carrying out the past years, the biggest challenge is the lack of power supply in remote rural areas, in particularly that is the factor why the income of many rural farmers where palm oil is the main crop has not been increased.

According to the data of global palm oil supply, Indonesia is the largest palm oil producer in the world, but as the basic infrastructure is not pleasing, many oil palm fruits failed to be sent to processed plants for refinery within the shortest time and thus has affected the quality and hence do not allow a better bargaining advantage in palm oil price.

This problem that has plagued the Induk KUD for years, after many years of hard work, finally in April 2018, under the witness of Duke Capital and numerous partners, the Induk KUD has signed a MoU with Controlnet Intrenational Ltd. from Taiwan to assist the Induk KUD to build 1,000 small biomass power plants in the rural provinces in Indonesia to lay out green micro-grid network system for the communities of farmers in remote areas.

Through the construction of the bio-energy power station and the green micro-grid system built by Jiange Technology, many palm oil-growing villages with a population of less than 1,000 people can build a small palm oil processing plant to ensure the harvest of palm fruit. It can be refined into palm oil in the shortest time, and the residue generated in the refining process will be turned into a power generation source for the biomass power station to form a green and environmentally friendly power supply ecosystem.

Besides supplying electricity to palm oil processing plants, the excessive power generated by the power stations can be supplied to the surrounding rural communities through the green microgrid network system. The branches of the National Federation of Rural Co-operative (Induk KUD) in the rural areas can assist local farmers to carry out various small-scale rural processing industries to promote the development of rural agriculture-related industries with the regional economies.

The implementation of this plan is complementary to the active promotion of the Indonesian government in its economic growth policies outside Java. At the same time, it is a very important strategic layout for the National Federation of Rural Co-operative (Induk KUD) to implement “Smart Agriculture” and promote “Precise Poverty Alleviation” throughout the whole country.

偏乡地区小型生质能发电站:智慧农业的推手 - Part 2/2

印民全国乡村合作社联盟(Induk KUD)在过去多年的扶贫努力中,偏乡地区地区缺乏电力供应就是最大的挑战,尤其是对许多以种植棕榈油为主要经济作物的乡村地区农民来说,这是导致农民收入一直没法提高的主要原因。

若根据全球棕榈油供应的数据显示,印度尼西亚是全球最大棕榈油生产国,但基于基础建设的不尽完善,导致许多棕榈油果无法在采摘后以最快速度送到加工厂进行提炼而影响了品质,而无法在棕榈油的价格上占有更好的议价优势。

这个困扰印民全国乡村合作社联盟(Induk KUD)多年的问题,经过多年努力之后,最终在2018年4月,在公爵资本与众多合作伙伴的见证之下,与来自台湾的健格科技股份公司(Controlnet International)签订了协助合作社联盟在印度尼西亚偏乡地区建设1000座小型生质能发电站的协议,为偏远地区的农民社区铺设绿色微电网系统。

通过健格科技所建设的生质能发电站与绿色微电网系统的铺设,许许多多人口少于1000人的棕榈油种植村庄就能建设小型的棕榈油加工厂,确保所收成的棕榈油果能够在最短时间内提炼成棕榈油,而提炼过程中所产生的残渣则转而作为生质能发电站的发电原料,形成一个绿色环保的电力供应生态圈。

发电站所生产的电力除了供应棕榈油加工厂之外,过剩的电力还可以透过绿色微电网供应给周遭的农村社区,那么合作社联盟设在各偏乡地区的分社理事就可以协助当地农民开展各类小型的乡村加工工业,促进乡村农业相关工业与地区经济的发展。

这个计划的落实与印度尼西亚政府积极推动爪哇岛以外的经济成长政策是相辅相成的,同时,对合作社联盟在全国落实“智慧农业”推进“精准扶贫”更是非常重要的策略布局。

Small-scale Biomass Power Stations in Rural Areas: the Promoter of Smart Agriculture.- Part 1/2

Since long, the archipelago geography of Indonesia's has been resulting Indonesia facing tough challenges along Indonesia’s establishment of basic infrastructure in particular in the areas of power coverage and power generation. Nevertheless, it is a common consensus that the economic growth of a nation is inseparable from the industrial development in many aspects. Hence, shall the Indonesian government want to stimulate the economic development in the areas outside the Java Island, it is even more crucial to ensure reliable power supply to all regions of the entire country, in order to improve the living standards of the residents and build various industries so that in return numerous job opportunities can be created for the local residents.

According to the data released on the website of the Indonesian Research Department of the GBG (Global Business Guide), as of the end of 2011, the total installed power supply capacity of Indonesia was 31 billion watts, while the electrification coverage rate was only 71% which indicates that more than 80 million people do not have power supply. In 2003, the government set a goal to achieve 90% power coverage by 2020, and at the same time reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 26%. The goal has demonstrated the need for significant investments in the country's power supply capacity and tremendous opportunities created by the industry to investors, especially in the renewable energy industry.

In the power system of Indonesia, the Indonesian State Power Corporation (Perusahaan Listrik Negara, PLN) takes care of 84% of the country's electricity transmission, while the remaining 16% is completed by independent power producers (IPP). In terms of raw material supply, coal is the main source of fuel for grid-connected power generation, accounting for 40% of the total capacity of power plants, followed by oil 29% and natural gas 21%, while renewable energy accounts for only 10% (data from Indonesia's 2010 Indonesia Basic Infrastructure Report). In terms of off-grid power generation capacity, the power generation capacity reached 6.4 billion watts in 2010. In the non-renewable energy field, diesel power plants are the main form of power generation, while renewable energy accounts for 50% of the total off-grid capacity. Implemented with the Solar Home System (SHS) (data from 2010 Indonesia Basic Infrastructure Report). The overall domestic electricity demand is increased along with the macroeconomic growth in the country. It is estimated that Indonesia's macro economy will continue to grow at an annual growth rate of approximately 9% by 2019. However, due to lack of investment and excessive dependence on expensive fossil fuels, Indonesia's power generation capacity has grown at an average annual growth rate of less than 5%, failing to keep pace with demand growth.

Indonesia is facing a huge gap in between power supply and demand. According to the 2016-2025 Electricity Supply Business Plan (Rencana Umum Penyediaan Tenaga Listrik – “RUPTL”), Indonesia shall be facing a prolonged predicament of huge gap in between power supply and demand. Therefore, to increase the capacity of power plant establishment has become a critical component for the economic growth of Indonesia. In the 2016-2025 Electricity Supply Business Plan (Rencana Umum Penyediaan Tenaga Listrik – “RUPTL”), to meet Indonesia’s economic growth rate of 6.7%, Indonesia will need to install additional power generators of 80,538 MW in 10 years, with an average annual growth of about 8,000 MW and requires an estimation of a total investment of USD153.7 billion which the projected required IPP investment is more than USD 100 billion (based on the consideration of 70% new power generators installed by independent power producers (IPP) IPP investment). Such calculation depicts that the total market size is relatively huge.

偏乡地区小型生质能发电站:智慧农业的推手 - Part 1/2

一直以来,基于印度尼西亚的群岛地理形态,使到该国在基础建设,尤其是电力覆盖和发电上所面对的挑战尤为严峻。然而,众所周知,一个国家的经济成长,在很多层面都离不开工业的发展,故此,印度尼西亚政府若要刺激爪哇岛以外地区的经济发展就更需要确保全国各地区都能有可靠的电力供应,从而改善居民的生活水平并建立各行各业,反过来再为当地居民创造就业机会。

根据GBG(Global Business Guide)网站印度尼西亚调研部发布的资料显示,截至2011年底,印度尼西亚总装机发电容量为310亿瓦,而电气化覆盖率仅为71%,有超过8000万人用不上电。2003年,政府定下目标,到2020年实现电力覆盖90%,同时减少26%的温室气体排放。该目标突显了向该国电力容量进行重大投资的必要性以及该行业为投资者提供的巨大机遇,尤其在可再生能源领域。[i]

在印度尼西亚的电力系统中,印尼国家电力公司(Perusahaan Listrik Negara,简称PLN)包揽全国84%的电力传输,而剩余的16%则由独立发电企业(IPP)完成。在来源方面,煤炭是并网发电的主要燃料来源,占发电厂总容量的40%,其次是石油29%和天然气21%,而可再生能源仅占10%(数据来源于2010年印尼基础设施报告)。在离网发电容量方面,2010年发电量达64亿瓦,在非可再生能源领域,柴油发电厂是主要的发电形式,而可再生能源占离网总容量的50%,发电主要通过水力发电和家用太阳能系统(SHS)来实现(数据来源于2010年印尼基础设施报告)。国内整体的电力需求正随该国宏观经济增长而增加,据预计,到2019年印尼的宏观经济将以每年约9%的速度持续增长。但是,由于缺乏投资以及过度依赖于昂贵的化石燃料,印度尼西亚发电装机容量的年均增长率不到5%,未能跟上需求增长的步伐。

印度尼西亚电力供应不足,电力需求存在巨大缺口。按照2016-2025年电力规划(RUPTL)判断,印尼电力将长期保持需求巨大、供应不足的状态。加大电力项目建设,已成为印尼经济发展需要解决的一个关键问题。在2016-2025年RUPTL规划中,印尼为满足印尼年均6.7%的经济增长,需要在10年内新增加装机80,538MW,年均增加约8,000MW,需要总投资估计1,537亿美元,所需IPP投资超过1,000亿美元[(按照70%新增装机由独立发电商(IPP)IPP投资来考虑)],市场总规模相当大。

Whilst, the Duke Agricultural Fund is a private equity fund established through the audit of this international trustee, with the objective of raising USD60 million in its first private equity fund for the first phrase of various development projects of the National Federation of Rural Co-operative (Induk KUD). In the collaboration with the Induk KUD, the role of Duke Capital is to raise more funds through the model of Impact Investing, in order to bolster investment in the various smart agro-based projects in Indonesia. At the same time, Duke Capital will also consolidate experts from diverse backgrounds, technology and financial channels, to assist the members of Induk KUD and also peasant farmers in other villages.

We help to identify and support investment opportunities that can boost and improve the livelihoods of farmers and fishermen, and later can reduce poverty. We also empower women to invent sustainable crops and agricultural products.

The Duke Agricultural Fund was established to support the National Federation of Rural Co-operative (Induk KUD) to build agro-ecology that connects nine blocks, consisting of, cassava growing, cassava processing plants and animal farms in Bangka Island, shipbuilding port and squish processing plants in North Maluku, palm oil biomass power plants in Sumatra, as well as laying hen farms in Central Java.

Others include the introduction of digital technology to set up digital operation, in order to improve the efficiency of supply chain management, transparent e-commerce, banking and finance, big data analysis, logistics and the establishment of industrial towns, to promote “Precision Poverty Alleviation”, to achieve the optimum asset allocation results in “Smart Agriculture”.

Indonesia is a country rich with abundance of natural resources. Currently, it still has 36.8 million hectares of undeveloped agricultural land. Should these lands be utilised properly, Indonesia will be able to produce sufficient food to meet the need of all countries in the region and will become a granary of the world.

Nevertheless, it is still a major challenge to provide sufficient and affordable food to growing cities, as it requires huge investment fund in land and manpower, high technology and skills, comprehensive food distribution channels, warehouse, marketing tools, indeed, millions of farmers who are involved in production and supply of food.

Indisputably, private sector plays an extremely significant role in the development of smart agro-based industries in Indonesia. Through the integration of local, regional and global agricultural supply chains, the small farmers and agricultural business owners shall work closely and collectively to become a powerful pillar for Indonesia’s economy.

Therefore, the National Federation of Rural Co-operative (Induk KUD) that has 9,437 branches and more than 13 million members (nearly 60 million including members’ family members) in 27 provinces across Indonesia, endeavours to integrate all farmers and fishermen into the global food supply chain, in order to play a more important role in the national economy. To achieve this vision, the Induk KUD has collaborated with Duke Capital, in order to realize the modernisation of the Induk KUD to deal with the next wave of the global market growth.

The Smart Agro-based industry is currently a fast-growing industry in the world, contributed by the tremendously rapid growth of world population.
