🚛🇲🇾 Malaysian Lorry Driver Hailed as Hero After Stopping Runaway Express Bus
A Malaysian lorry driver is being praised for his quick thinking after helping to stop a runaway express bus carrying 21 passengers on a highway near the Menora Tunnel in Ipoh.
The dramatic incident took place on June 15 when driver Wong Tuck Meng noticed a bus behind him had lost control due to a technical problem during its journey from Kedah to Kuala Lumpur.
Dashcam footage that later went viral showed Wong manoeuvring his lorry to act as a barrier in front of the bus. By carefully positioning his vehicle against the guardrail while slowing down, he helped bring the bus to a safe stop without causing harm to other road users.
Authorities said his actions may have saved the lives of all 21 passengers on board.
For his bravery, Wong was honoured by the Malaysian Road Safety Council on June 23. He received a certificate of appreciation and a RM10,000 cash reward in recognition of his courage and selfless actions.
Despite the praise, Wong remained humble, saying he did not see himself as a hero and was simply glad he could help. He added that his main concern was the safety of everyone on the road and that he continuously sounded his horn to warn other motorists of the danger.
Meanwhile, bus driver Ahmad Yasin Ab Malek said he became anxious after realising he had lost control of the vehicle and believed the lorry was the safest option available at that critical moment.
Many Malaysians have since applauded Wong for his calmness, bravery and willingness to put himself at risk to protect others.
