I thank everyone who has posted and are posting positive stories about autism and individuals diagnosed with some form of autism or another. The positive stories are real and need to be told.
However, don't forget the other stories. These are the stories of the children with autism who go through hell.
Their ears may suddenly hurt because of some sounds, the same sounds that don't bother us.
Their eyes may occasionally hurt from stimuli that don't affect us.
Their tummies may hurt because they can't digest food in the same way we can.
Their brains may go haywire because their systems are not working well like yours are.
They may throw themselves against things, bump into you or your child, or hit themselves (or you!) just to get some feeling because their proprioceptive sense is so distorted and they feel numb physically (imagine the last time you felt numb, like from a local anesthetic. Well, some kids feel that way all the time).
So these children may suddenly scream, cry, run, kick, throw themselves down on the ground. Wouldn't you, if you were stuck in this "prison"?
So these are some of the other stories. The painful ones. The Other Real Stories, that don't get airtime as much. Remember these children, too.
