US President Donald Trump’s administration on Friday issued a month-long sanctions waiver allowing the sale of Russian oil and petroleum products that are at sea, extending an earlier move to soften surging energy prices.
The licence, issued by the treasury department, comes two days after treasury secretary Scott Bessent said that Washington would not renew the waiver.

The latest move allows for the purchase of oil and petroleum products that have been loaded onto any vessel as of Friday through 12.01am (0401 GMT) on May 16.

Singapore’s business lobby has joined the government in pushing back against a sweeping US trade probe that alleges manufacturing overcapacity and failures to enforce bans on imports linked to forced labour.
A day after the Ministry of Trade and Industry defended its trade regime as being aligned with international standards, the Singapore Business Federation said it has filed a formal response of its own.

“We urge the US Administration to recognize our shared commitment to fair, market-oriented trade and to avoid measures that would disrupt the deeply intertwined supply chains,” Kok Ping Soon, chief executive of the federation, said in a statement on Thursday.

Malaysia, a leading palm oil exporter, is well placed to supply edible oils to countries facing rising food prices and fertiliser disruptions due to the Strait of Hormuz closure.
Julian McGill, the managing director of UK-based economic advisory firm Glenauk Economics, attributed this to palm oil production being less affected by fertiliser supply disruptions due to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.

He said that oil palm, Malaysia’s most important crop, accounts for around 75% of the country’s planted area and has several characteristics that put the sector in a safe position.

Full-time customs officers and round-the-clock services are needed at Pengerang port in Johor to overcome significant shipping delays, according to a senior marine industry executive.
Jeyenderan Ramasamy of Maritime Network Sdn Bhd said vessel clearance processes now could take up to 10 hours, Bernama reported.

“Customs operations are limited to standard office hours, from 8am to 6pm, and are closed on weekends, while port activities operate 24 hours a day,” said Jeyenderan.

Binastra Corp Bhd has been handed a RM316 million contract to complete construction of the abandoned Subang Sentral project in Subang Jaya.
The construction group was appointed to revive the project by HCK Capital Group Bhd, the white knight which took over the stalled project in USJ1, formerly known as Empire Remix 1.

The project was less than one-third completed when construction stopped in 2019 and eventually abandoned after its developer encountered financial difficulties.

The government’s Visit Malaysia 2026 (VM2026) campaign may take a hit from the escalating geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and a shift in global sentiment, says TA Research.
The campaign’s ambitious target of 47 million international arrivals and RM329 billion in tourism receipts may be impacted by headwinds from rising geopolitical tensions in the region, the research house said in a note today.

“The escalation of geopolitical tensions in the Middle East comes at a pivotal moment for Malaysia, coinciding with the launch of Visit Malaysia 2026. The campaign now faces mounting headwinds that could challenge its momentum,” it said.

IJM Corporation Bhd’s independent adviser has recommended that shareholders reject Sunway Bhd’s takeover offer of RM3.15 per share, deeming it unfair and unreasonable.
In a filing with Bursa Malaysia today, IJM said the appointed adviser, M&A Securities Sdn Bhd, noted that the offer price represents a discount of approximately 46% to 51% to the estimated value of IJM shares, which ranges from RM5.84 to RM6.48.

“The board has concurred with the conclusion and recommendation of M&A Securities that the offer is not fair and not reasonable.

President Donald Trump’s administration started the first of several sweeping trade investigations that set the stage for new tariffs, the centrepiece of a push to replace levies struck down by the US Supreme Court.
US trade representative (USTR) Jamieson Greer announced yesterday that his office would begin a probe into more than a dozen major economies under Section 301 of the Trade Act focused on alleged excess manufacturing capacity.

The investigations, which typically take months to complete, are required for the president to unilaterally place duties on imports from specific countries deemed to employ unfair trading practices.

Bursa Malaysia opened slightly lower on Wednesday, tracking Wall Street’s weaker performance overnight.
At 9.10am, the FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI (FBM KLCI) eased 2.83 points, or 0.16%, to 1,709.12 from Tuesday’s close of 1,711.95, after opening 0.52 of-a-point weaker at 1,711.43.

Market breadth was negative, with losers leading gainers 293 to 128, while 251 counters were unchanged, 1,950 counters untraded, and 10 suspended.
