Bursa Malaysia opened higher, buoyed by overnight gains on Wall Street, but surrendered early advances as investors booked mild profits in selected blue chips and smaller-cap stocks, an analyst said.
At 9.30am, the FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI (FBM KLCI) slipped 2.94 points to 1,634.86, down from Thursday’s close of 1,637.80, after opening 20.93 points higher at 1,658.73.

Market breadth was slightly negative, with decliners outnumbering gainers 297 to 265. Meanwhile, 388 counters remained unchanged, 1,624 were untraded, and 17 were suspended.

Bursa Malaysia extended its uptrend to open higher on Thursday, tracking gains on Wall Street, as traders largely shrugged off the US government shutdown, hoping it would be short-lived, an analyst said.
At 9.10am, the FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI (FBM KLCI) rose 5.65 points to 1,626.52 from Wednesday’s close of 1,620.87, after opening 0.81 of-a-point higher at 1,621.68.

Market breadth was positive, with gainers outnumbering losers 298 to 102. Meanwhile, 288 counters were unchanged, 1,885 untraded, and 16 suspended.

The ringgit extended gains against the US dollar on Wednesday, opening higher as concerns over a potential United States government shutdown weighed on the greenback.
At 8.02am, the local note stood at 4.1980/4.2190 against the US dollar, up from Tuesday’s close of 4.2050/4.2090.

Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd chief economist Afzanizam Rashid said persistent worries over a US shutdown were likely to support the ringgit, while expectations of lower US interest rates could further weaken the dollar.

The ringgit opened firmer against the US dollar and most major currencies on Thursday, tracking expectations of US interest rate cuts after softer economic data.
At 8am, the local unit stood at 4.2085/4.2300 against the greenback, up from Wednesday’s close of 4.2185/4.2220.

Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd, chief economist Afzanizam Rashid said the US Producer Price Index (PPI) eased to 2.6% in August, below market forecasts of 3.3%, strengthening the case for a Federal Reserve (Fed) rate cut next week.
