Work-Related Rumination 🧠💼

Have you ever left the office, but your mind is still at work?
That is work-related rumination — when we continue thinking repeatedly about work problems, stressful situations, unfinished tasks, or difficult interactions even after working hours.
Job stressors such as time pressure, heavy workloads, and task demands can trigger this type of thinking. But it is not always about the workload. Interpersonal problems and workplace incivility can also keep our minds occupied. Research by Kinnunen et al. (2017) highlights the link between job stressors and rumination, while Demsky et al. (2019) found that workplace incivility can increase negative rumination.
Sometimes, the meeting is over, the laptop is closed, and we are already home — but the conversation keeps playing in our head.

This is why a healthy workplace is not only about managing workload. How people communicate, treat, and support each other also matters for employees’ psychological well-being.

Workplace Ostracism: When Being Ignored Becomes a Workplace Stressor

Have you ever noticed that being ignored at work can be more exhausting than having a difficult conversation?
Workplace ostracism refers to the feeling of being ignored, excluded, or left out by others in the workplace. While it may look like a small interpersonal issue, its impact can be much deeper.

When employees feel excluded, they often start asking themselves: “Why am I being treated this way?” This constant self-analysis can consume valuable psychological resources such as attention, emotional energy, and willpower. Over time, these resources can become depleted.

Normally, positive social interactions help employees feel connected, supported, and motivated, which can contribute to better work performance. However, when employees experience exclusion, the workplace can become an interpersonal stressor rather than a source of support.

From an HR and people-management perspective, this is an important reminder: Employee wellbeing is not only about workload and salary. It is also about how people are treated and whether they feel included.
Sometimes, a simple “Are you okay?”, including someone in a discussion, or acknowledging their contribution can make a meaningful difference.
