SINGAPORE: The Land Transport Authority said if there is a new, or an increase, in toll charges by Malaysia at the Causeway, Singapore will match them in due course. That is because it has been Singapore's practice to peg its tolls to match those set by Malaysia at the Causeway and the Second Link, LTA said in a statement, in response to media queries.

LTA cited reports saying Malaysia will raise toll charges for all vehicles except motorcycles travelling from Singapore to Johor through the Johor Customs, Immigration and Quarantine (CIQ) Complex at the Causeway. The reports also said Malaysia would introduce a new toll for all vehicles travelling from Johor to Singapore, with both charges coming into effect from August.

LTA noted that these causeway toll changes are different from Malaysia's earlier announcement to impose an entry fee on foreign-registered vehicles entering Johor.

Reports said that when new charges kick in, cars will pay about S$6.50 (RM16.50) for a return day trip to Singapore, compared to the current one-way charge of about S$1.10 (RM 2.90). Buses would pay S$5.20 (RM13.30) to and from Singapore, while taxis would be charged S$3.20 (RM8.20) per two-way trip.

LTA said Singapore has not received any word on the new toll, or increase in toll charges, from Malaysian authorities, and has requested for official confirmation of the media reports.

LTA said that with regards to the proposed entry fee on foreign-registered vehicles entering Johor, Singapore had earlier contacted the Malaysian government to seek details. It is awaiting Malaysia's reply before deciding on its response.
