🩻 X-Ray, CT, MRI, Ultrasound, Mammogram, PET-CT — can you tell the difference?
When we go to the hospital for a check-up, we often hear:
“Let’s do an X-Ray first.”
“You may need a CT Scan.”
“We might need to arrange an MRI.”
And many people immediately wonder:
Why not just do the most detailed scan once and get everything checked? 🤔
The truth is, different scans are designed to look at different things.
🩻 X-Ray
Commonly used to examine bones, the chest and lungs. It is quick and widely available.
🖥️ CT Scan
Provides detailed cross-sectional images of the body. Commonly used for the lungs, internal organs, injuries, bleeding and the assessment of certain tumours.
🧲 MRI
Especially useful for examining the brain, spine, nerves, joints and soft tissues — and it does not use ionising radiation.
🌊 Ultrasound
Uses sound waves to create images. Commonly used to examine abdominal organs, for gynaecological examinations and during pregnancy.
🎀 Mammogram
A specialised X-ray examination mainly used for breast cancer screening and evaluating certain breast abnormalities.
🔬 PET-CT
Not only shows the body’s structure, but also helps observe metabolic activity in tissues. It is commonly used in certain cancers for staging, treatment response and recurrence assessment.
So, a more expensive scan doesn’t automatically mean it’s a better scan.
An MRI isn’t necessarily “better” than an X-Ray, and having a PET-CT doesn’t automatically mean the condition is serious.
The type of scan your doctor chooses depends on your symptoms, the body part involved, the suspected condition and your clinical needs.
