Payments giant Mastercard has agreed to buy CipherTrace, a firm that scans blockchains for illicit transactions.

The surprise acquisition announced Thursday by the companies in a press release gives Mastercard the ability to track over 900 cryptocurrencies. Details of the acquisition were not disclosed.

The deal is the latest sign of robust activity in the crypto tracing sector as governments and banks look to ramp up monitoring and compliance.

Earlier this year, Daniel Loeb’s Third Point Ventures led a $27 million investment in CipherTrace. That round was on the heels of a $100 million Series D that valued competing firm Chainalysis at $4.2 billion.

In a statement, Mastercard President of Cyber & Intelligence Ajay Bhalla said, “With the rapid growth of the digital asset ecosystem comes the need to ensure it is trusted and safe. Our aim is to build upon the complementary capabilities of Mastercard and CipherTrace to do just this.”

Bitcoin and Ethereum prices rose as the global cryptocurrency market was trading in green. Bitcoin is having a winning run as it rose over the $44,000-mark. Several other cryptocurrencies have made bigger gains.

This comes as members of Russia's national legislature have said that Moscow might accept Bitcoin for oil from countries with which it shares good terms.

BITCOIN, ETHEREUM PRICES
Bitcoin was trading 2.49 per cent up at $44,179. Ethereum was trading 2.87 per cent at $3,141.86.

OTHER CRYPTOCURRENCIES
XRP was up 0.49 per cent at $0.840829, Solana gained by 7.30 per cent at $104.46, Cardano was up by 4.99 per cent, Avalanche was up by 0.99 per cent.

Dogecoin was down by 0.27 per cent and Shiba Inu rose by 1.31 per cent.

"The global crypto market cap and trading volume rose by nearly 3 per cent and 7 per cent over the last day. Bitcoin and most other cryptos had a good day on Thursday. BTC and ETH gained 3 per cent each, trading above US$43,000 and US$3,000 levels,"

The global crypto market capitalisation rose 0.81 percent over the last 24 hours to $2.23 trillion while the total trading volume fell substantially by 25.65 percent to $66.83 billion.

While DeFi accounted for 21.93 percent of the trading volume at $14.66 billion, stablecoins made up 74.78 percent at $49.98 billion. The market dominance of Bitcoin tumbled 0.18 percent to 39.91 percent today morning. It is currently trading at $46,891.16.

As for major cryptocurrencies, Bitcoin rose 1.68 percent to trade at Rs 37,86,507 while Ethereum rose 0.86 percent to Rs 3,00,000. Cardano rose 3.1 percent to Rs 109.37 and Avalanche rose 4.1 percent to Rs 9,199. Polkadot rose 5.22 percent to Rs 2,272.19 and Litecoin rose 1.96 percent at Rs 11,943.07 over the last 24 hours. Tether fell 0.54 percent to trade at Rs 79.54

Memecoin SHIB increased 0.67 percent while Dogecoin decreased 0.82 percent to trade at Rs 13.79. LUNA rose around 5.21 percent to Rs 7,268.21.

Over the last 12 months, Shiba Inu has received more than 188 million views

On the other hand, Bitcoin, the world's most popular cryptocurrency, stood at second position with 145 million views during the same period. This was followed by Cardano and Ethereum, at the fourth and fifth places, with 86 million views and 81 million views, respectively.

The Goods and Services Tax (GST) department has recovered Rs 49.20 crore in cash pertaining to GST evaded by WazirX, one of the largest cryptocurrency exchanges in India. The department detected a GST evasion worth Rs 40.5 crore.
