One of the biggest misconceptions we see among expats is thinking that private medical insurance in Mexico works the same way as in the U.S. or Canada. It doesn’t.
In Mexico, private insurance is built around three key pillars:
1. Your medical history
2. Your age at entry
3. The level of hospitals you want access to... and a simple way to understand it is with a hotel analogy:
4★ Regional Plans
Coverage focused on one state or region (for example, Yucatán).
You have access to all the top private hospitals in the area, but not nationwide or abroad.
5★ National Plans
Access to the best private hospitals across all of Mexico (Mexico City, Monterrey, Guadalajara, Cancún, Mérida, etc.).
Global Plans
Worldwide coverage, including extensive hospital networks in the U.S. and other countries. These are usually international policies.
Choosing between them is not just about budget. It’s about how you live, where you travel, and very importantly, your current health.
Another key difference many expats don’t realize:
Private insurance in Mexico is medical underwriting-based.
That means age and pre-existing conditions matter a lot, and not every profile is automatically accepted. Some conditions may be covered with waiting periods, some excluded, and some profiles may require special planning.
Also, most Mexican private plans require legal residence in Mexico, while international plans can sometimes work with proof of local ties or temporary residence, depending on the carrier.
There is no “one size fits all” plan. The right structure depends on your health profile, your future plans, and the level of hospitals you want access to.
